Who was Guru Jambheshwar?
28 August 1451, this is the date when a son was born in the house of Kshatriya Lohatji Panwar in Pipasar, a small village of Nagaur, the princely state of Central Rajasthan. The period in which a child is born is called Bhakti Kaal. Born in a Rajput family, this child was named Dhanraj. But he could not speak anything for the first 7 years, so his family members started calling him ‘dumb throat’. Exactly seven years later he started speaking. After this his spiritual life started, then he got a name and title and was called Guru Jambheshwar. At the age of seven he got the job of grazing cows. When he turned 16, he met Guru Gorakhnath. He gained knowledge from him.

People got influenced by the thoughts of Guru Jambheshwar and started joining him. In the year 1485, at the age of 34, he performed Havan on a big sand dune in village Mukam, this place is called Samrathal Dhora. During this huge havan, a sect was started by establishing the Kalash which was given the name ‘Bishnoi’. The first person to join this sect was Guru Jambheshwar’s uncle Pulhoji. Guru Jambheshwar made 29 rules for the people joining Bishnoi sect.

These 29 rules are also connected to the word Bishnoi. In the local language of Marwar, ‘Bis’ means ’20’ and Noi means ‘9’, when these two are added the sum is 29. The name Bishnoi is also taken from here. Guru Jambheshwar created a code of conduct of 29 rules for his followers. Of these, 10 rules were made for one’s own safety and health, 9 rules for the protection of animals, 7 rules for the protection of society and 4 rules for spiritual upliftment.
