When Vinod Khanna refused to become the Prime Minister of India, ‘You don’t know, this is a very dangerous game’

New Delhi. In the 70-80s, it was said that if anyone could give competition to Amitabh Bachchan, it would be Vinod Khanna. But when his stardom was at its peak, he made a mistake and the mistake was such that it shocked not only his family but also his fans. After taking a break from Bollywood, he decided to join Osho Ashram in America. However, after some time he returned to India and then returned to the industry. I returned, but like before I neither got name nor work. So then Vinod Khanna took a decision and entered politics.

After becoming a superstar, a monk and then an actor, Vinod Khanna had now become a politician. Lok Sabha elections were to be held in the country in the very next year of joining BJP i.e. 1998. The party elected Vinod Khanna from Gurdaspur in Punjab in the Lok Sabha elections. He was re-elected in 1999 and 2004. He was also the Union Minister of Culture and Tourism. Vinod Khanna became Minister of State in the Ministry of External Affairs.

‘This is a very dangerous game’
Screenwriter, actor and film director Ananth Mahadevan told, ‘Once I told him, ‘Sir, you should stand for the post of Prime Minister of this country. We have no objection to a good looking Prime Minister. He said, ‘No Anant, you don’t know. This is a very dangerous game. It’s not as simple as you think. It’s not as straightforward as you think. I am an MP from Punjab, it is fine, I am doing my work, but beyond that it is not easy, even though I am in that position.

How was the relationship between Vinod Khanna and Anant Mahadevan?
Recalling his relationship with Vinod Khanna, Ananth said, ‘Till his demise, he used to send me very funny emails, full of jokes and anecdotes. We remained in touch for a long time. He said, ‘Vinod Khanna was not cool in any sense. But, he was not completely introverted either. If you talked to him, he would open up and talk to you about many things.

‘He has suffered a lot…’
Anant said that he has suffered a lot. He has seen a lot. Otherwise why would they want to work with someone like me? Let us tell you that after a brilliant career in showbiz, Vinod Khanna died in April 2017 at the age of 70. Was battling bladder cancer.
