The great musician Naushad had once said, ‘Hemlata has the vocal qualities of Lata Mangeshkar and the innocence of Noorjahan.’ SD Burman had once told his son Rahul Dev Burman, ‘I will get Hemlata to sing the song first, not you.’ Hemlata was one of those rare artists who had the ability to challenge the dominance of Lata Mangeshkar.
If you have a glimpse of Hemlata’s beautiful singing, then listen to the famous song ‘Kaun Disha Mein Leke Chala Re Batohiya’ recorded in her voice in the film ‘Nadiya Ke Paar’, which she sang beautifully in very difficult circumstances. Actually, when this song was recorded, Hemlata was pregnant and her delivery date had already passed. This special thing makes her the only singer who had the honor of recording a timeless classic at the most important moments of her life.
There was comparison with Lata Mangeshkar.
Hemlata sang many memorable Hindi songs with famous singer Yesudas. In childhood, Hemlata was called ‘Baby Lata’ and in adolescence she was called ‘Doosri Lata’. Interestingly, Hemlata became the favorite artiste for the film producers who found Lata Mangeshkar’s fees too high or who could not get Lata Mangeshkar’s dates. She was his ‘Lata’.
