Vidhu Vinod Chopra has been active in the field of film making for almost 46 years.
On December 13, a film ‘Restart from Zero’ was released. This film is based on the making of last year’s movie ’12th Fail’.
This is the first time in Indian cinema history that a separate film has been made on the making of a film or in other words BTS (Behind the Scenes).
Its producer Vidhu Vinod Chopra has confirmed that this is not a documentary but a proper film. He has given an exclusive interview to Dainik Bhaskar.
Vidhu Vinod Chopra has 3 principles, which he tries to show through his films.
- Entertainment – to entertain people
- Education – To teach something through film
- Elevate – always moving forward
Explaining the third point, Vidhu Vinod Chopra says, ‘My new film Restart from Zero is being shown in theatres. It is based on the making of 12th Fail. During the making, people from my team were always standing with cameras.
Apart from shooting, he used to record everything on camera. Who am I talking to? How am I finalizing the location? Where am I going? All these things like who I was fighting with were recorded.
One day my team member showed me such a clip. I was very impressed. I thought that this could prove to be a wonderful journey. Then I compiled all the behind-the-scenes videos and made a film – ‘Restart from Zero’.
Why was the film named Restart from Zero? To know this, let’s go back a bit.. Six years ago, Vidhu Vinod Chopra thought of making a film on the book ’12TH Fail’ based on the life of IPS Manoj Sharma. He wrote the script, but his colleagues did not give much response.
Everyone felt that the story had no substance. Even no one was ready to direct the film. However, Vidhu was confident in his script. He made a film with Vikrant Massey. The film worked because of word of mouth. Well, there are many moving films, but this one left an impact.
Now coming back to ‘restart from zero’. Vidhu Vinod Chopra felt that ’12TH Fail’ has left such an impact in people’s lives. If we make another film on its making, how much impact it will have. Because the film was rejected by everyone, even the director was hesitant. If we show the journey of how that film was made from beginning to end, it will be a different experience for the world.
This is how the film ‘Restart from Zero’ was made. It has also been released on 13th December.

Question- How did you come up with the idea of making a film on the making of ’12th Fail’? answer- When I was shooting for ’12th Fail’ in Mukherjee Nagar, I saw sadness on the faces of the people there. The students looked quite restless. In those days, many suicide cases were heard from Kota also.
I thought of making a film that would inspire people to restart from zero. For this I took the help of the making videos of ’12th Fail’. However, it was not clear how to make the film. But when I started making it, it got done. I just want to tell people that they should never lose courage.
Question- You had to struggle a lot to shoot the film at real locations, why did you not go to Film City? answer- I like to keep trying. I could easily set up a set in any studio and shoot. What was the need for me to go to Mukherjee Nagar? What was the need for me to go and shoot in a village in Chambal?
Now you may call it madness, but this madness is my strength. People tell me that you don’t look 72 years old. Maybe because I’m not a tired person. I like to do new experiments.
Question: During the shooting, you grabbed a man by his collar. What was the matter? answer- I can’t tolerate wrong. You are talking nicely to me. However, it has happened many times at this very place that I have got angry and left. I feel bad when the other person asks a wrong question. I believe that after this interview 10 people will watch my film. However, what about the things that will make me feel bad in this matter?
The man you are talking about, I tore not only his collar but also his shirt. Perhaps that thing was not recorded on camera. He was misbehaving on the set.
Question- No one was ready to direct ’12th Fail’, then what thought did you take on the responsibility yourself? answer- You will be surprised, 5 directors had refused to make the film. Those who rejected the story had made a small number of films.
One of them had not even made a single film. I was even told that sir, don’t make this film, it won’t work at all.
But the film was made and it also completed its silver jubilee. So much so that at one time it was running on every platform including theatre, TV and OTT.
Question- How do you look at marketing and film promotion? answer- Marketing etc. are all lies. The film is falsely described as housefull, while the theaters are found empty. The audience is fooled by buying tickets on their own.
Look, I am telling you myself that no one came to watch my film yesterday. 7 people had reached one place. That was also a big thing for me, because I was expecting 5 people.
Question- What are the reactions of people regarding the film ‘Restart from Zero’? answer- People feel that I have done something strange. For the first time, a separate movie has been made on the making of a film. People are liking the film. I am being sent envelopes.
People are writing lines in praise. Even Rs 20 was visible in one card. That 20 rupees is an appreciation money for me, whose value is very high for me.
Question- What is the biggest success for you, do you have any other desires in life? answer– When I used to study in the Film Institute of India. Then I had only one wish in life. I want to have DVDs of my films in front of me at the last moment. I just keep watching the films I make. There should be a smile on the face at that time. Let my heart tell me that whatever work I did, I did it well.
As far as success is concerned, you asked. My conscience should be happy, this is the only success.
