This time in Reel to Real, we have learned about the process of shooting the film at a famous public location in Mumbai.

Gateway of India, Marine Drive, Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, Mud Island…these places have a Bollywood connection. In fact, films and web series like OMG-2, Darling, The Lunchbox and Railway Man have been shot at these public or real locations. However, shooting on these real locations is full of difficulties. Many times stars have to face incidents like molestation. This is the reason why actors shy away from shooting at these places.

Many films have also been shot in local trains of Mumbai. If shooting is to be done in 4 bogies, then the fare for 12 hours is Rs 7 lakh. The charge for shooting on the platform is Rs 2 lakh.

In today’s Reel to Real, we spoke to location manager Surjeet Singh, Avinash Kumar, Vineet Abhishek, chief of public relations, Western Railways, Mumbai and actress Smiley Suri, to know the entire process of shooting at a real location.

He told us how shooting is done at real locations. How much does it cost to shoot here? How are the local people managed during the shooting. And how is shooting at night on real locations?

Finalizing the real location is the most challenging task. Surjeet Singh says- Many films are shot at real locations like Marine Drive, Gateway of India in Mumbai. However, shooting at these places is not at all easy.

After the script is finalized, the location is demanded by the production. Then we start looking for locations according to the scenes. This takes most of the time. After shortlisting 3-4 locations, talks are held with the owner there. After everything is finalized from the owner’s side, we tell the director about those shooting locations. Then his team goes to see him. For shooting in locations that are locked, permission is taken from the local police and BMC (Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation).

After this the work of base area starts at the location. Such as the living arrangements of the actors and their team. Food stall. Accommodation arrangements for crew members. Setup to keep tent and lighting equipment.

There is a charge for location permission To shoot at real locations, permission has to be taken from BMC and local police. Permission is obtained in about 7 days. A fixed amount also has to be paid for this permission.

Shooting of films also takes place in local trains of Mumbai. Many films have also been shot in local trains of Mumbai. There are two types of shooting in railways, one on the railway platform and the other in the train bogie. For this, special permission has to be taken from the Railways. There are different charges for both categories of permissions. For example, if shooting is to be done on a separate railway platform, then the charge for that is Rs 2 lakh for 12 hours. At the same time, shooting inside 4 bogies costs Rs 7 lakh.

Shooting can be done only on Sundays in the week. There were no local passengers present in the train in which the shooting took place. If shooting is to be done in a running train, then permission is given to shoot within a limited distance only. Its charge is also different. Also, it is important to follow the rules and regulations of the Railway Department.

Seeing the shooting, the crowd goes out of control, local people even threaten Surjeet said- While shooting at a real location, the biggest task is to manage the people living nearby. Anyway, the world of films attracts the common people a lot. Seeing film stars, they become uncontrollable and it is our job to manage them. Many times the local people cause a lot of trouble. Even threaten. They think that after this they will get the money.

Makers do guerrilla shooting to avoid the crowd When shooting takes place at a real location, a crowd gathers. To avoid this crowd, makers sometimes do guerrilla shooting. That means shooting while hiding from the local people.

Regarding this, Avinash Kumar said- Like recently there was shooting of a film of Ameesha Patel. We had to take a close-up shot of Ameesha ji and her co-actor in a mall in Noida. We reached there with the camera without informing anyone and started shooting.

On the day of the last shoot, when we were about to leave, people in the mall came to know that actress Ameesha Patel had come. The crowd went out of control as soon as they recognized him. People were eager to shake hands with him and get their photos clicked. I cannot describe the scene of that day in words. Luckily we had bouncers outside the mall, who took care of everything.

Police is there for security during night shooting Many times one has to shoot at real locations even at night. In such a situation, the local police remains present at the location at night. There is a provision of vanity van for the stars and crew members. Especially there is complete arrangement for lighting.

People commented on the actress’s clothes during the shooting in college. Even though shooting at real locations gives a real touch to films, shooting at these places is full of challenges for the actors. Due to safety, they shy away from shooting at these places.

Sometimes incidents of tampering also happen while shooting at real locations. Regarding this, Location Manager Avinash said – It happens many times that fans become uncontrollable after seeing their favorite star. Knowingly or unknowingly they hug the star, sometimes even kissing him due to which the star feels uncomfortable.

Many times people make lewd comments on the actress’s attire. Once we were shooting in a college. Some children there were passing comments on the lead actress. They were making indecent comments on her attire. To prevent the matter from getting worse, we brought the actress out of the college.

We have to handle such situations with love. We cannot get angry at the other person, rather we have to explain things to them properly.
