Rekha Amitabh Bachchan Silsila: Rekha was nervous during the ‘I Hate You’ scene on the sets of the 1981 blockbuster film ‘Silsila’. It became difficult for him to deliver emotional dialogues in front of 15,000 people. Then Amitabh Bachchan calmed him down.
New Delhi : ‘Silsila’, released in 1981, is considered one of the biggest musical romantic films of Bollywood. Amitabh Bachchan, Rekha, and Jaya Bachchan were in the lead roles in this film. Even though this film has got the status of a cult classic today, it was not easy to make it. In 1994, in an interview with Dinesh Raheja, the then editor of Movie magazine, Rekha shared a challenging moment during the shooting of the film.
Rekha told about an incident during the ‘I Hate You’ scene when she had to speak an emotional dialogue and cry in front of 15,000 people. Rekha said, ‘It was very strange. There were 15,000 people present on the set at 5 in the morning. I had to speak a main dialogue while crying. I asked director Yash Chopra for more time, but he refused.

Rekha further said that in that difficult time, Amitabh Bachchan told me an anecdote about James Dean and his film ‘Giant’. He said, “James Dean also had to face a similar situation once. He simply turned around, shook off his nervousness in front of the crowd and said to himself, ‘What’s the worst that could happen?’ And then he gave his best.” This story helped Rekha to calm down and gain confidence. He told Amitabh- ‘I feel good after listening to you.’

As soon as the shooting started, the crowd of 15,000 people became silent. Rekha played her role well and when the scene ended and she hugged Amitabh, people booed. Rekha said, “When I hugged Amitji, people said ‘Oooh’ loudly. “I was having difficulty controlling my expressions.”
