This is the story of a woman who suffered from stye. It is an eye disease in which a pimple or boil-like growth appears on the edge of the eyelid and pus starts accumulating inside it. If the condition becomes serious, it has to be removed through a surgical operation.
See the graphic below to see what a stye in the eyes looks like. You may have seen many such cases around you.
Do you know that this condition in the eyes can also be caused by a thing that women consider a symbol of beauty. We are talking about kajal. That woman got this eye condition because of applying kajal all the time.
India’s renowned ophthalmologist Dr. Ashwin Agarwal was recently talking about eye health in a podcast. He was talking to Indian-American physician Dr. Paul Manickam. When Dr. Manickam asked him a question about kajal, Dr. Ashwin replied that if kajal is being applied outside the eyes, on the eyelid, then there is no problem with it.
But women apply kajal on the edge of the inner layer of the eyelid. Just above the lid margin. This can cause meibomian gland dysfunction.
This happens because the kajal blocks the pores of that gland. Secretion is happening from the gland, but due to the blocked path, it cannot come out and the fluid keeps accumulating. This increases the risk of infection and can cause stye. A surgical process may have to be done to remove the accumulated pus.
Kajal has been an important part of women’s beauty from Indian culture to modern fashion.
so today news of need I will talk about Kajal. Also, we will know that-
- What harm can applying kajal everyday cause to the eyes?
- What things should be kept in mind before buying Kajal?
- What is the correct way to apply kajal?
Expert: Dr. Vandana Khullar, Ophthalmologist, Pushpavati Singhania Hospital and Research Institute, New Delhi
Question: What kind of dangerous chemicals can be mixed in kajal?
answer- A report by Niti Aayog and Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) reveals that in India, the amount of lead like particles was found in Kajal and other eye cosmetics up to 70%, which is extremely dangerous for the eyes of everyone, be it children or adults.
In Australia too, a famous brand of kajal had 84% glass content. Along with this, high levels of arsenic, cadmium, chromium and other dangerous metals including mercury were found. After this, the Australian government had issued a warning against its use.
Experts say that these dangerous metals found in kajal can damage the cornea of the eyes.
Question: What harm can wearing kajal throughout the day cause to the eyes?
answer- Dr. Vandana Khullar says that generally there is no problem in applying kajal throughout the day. Actually, it depends a lot on the way you apply kajal. If kajal reaches inside the waterline of the eyes, it can cause irritation or infection in the eyes.
This can also cause corneal ulcers. Corneal ulcers are a type of wound that occurs on the cornea. Apart from this, applying kajal for a long time can cause inflammation on the eyelids i.e. blepharitis or dark circles under the eyes.
Understand from the graphic given below what kind of problems can occur by applying kajal for a long time.
Question- What things should be kept in mind while buying kajal?
answer- Today, there are many types of kajal available in the market like pencil, gel, liquid, powder. Applying fake or poor quality kajal can cause serious problems to the skin as well as eyes. In such a situation, there is a need to buy kajal very thoughtfully.
Understand from the graphic given below what kind of precautions should be taken while buying kajal.
Question- What things should be kept in mind while applying kajal?
answer- Understand from the points given below what things are important to keep in mind while applying kajal.
- Always keep your hands clean while applying kajal. Applying kajal with dirty hands can cause bacterial infection in the eyes.
- Avoid applying kajal inside the waterline of the eyes as it can cause dryness or irritation. Instead, apply kajal only on the outer part of the eyelashes.
- Apart from this, one should also avoid sharing eye makeup products with anyone.
Question- Why should kajal be removed before sleeping at night?
answer- Most people do not remove makeup before going to bed at night due to laziness. But do not go to sleep until you remove your makeup, especially kajal.
Actually, if the kajal is applied overnight, it dries and sticks near the eyes. This damages the sensitive skin around the eyes. Mascara, kajal, or eyeliner can get into the eyes while sleeping. This can cause problems like dry eyes, infection and blackness under the eyes i.e. dark circles.
Apart from this, keeping eye products on overnight can clog hair follicles and block the oil glands around your eyelashes. This weakens the eyelashes and causes the upper eyelids to droop. This is called Ptosis.
If the kajal or eyeliner rubs on the pillow while sleeping and gets into your eyes, it can cause irritation in the eyes or damage the cornea. Therefore, one should never sleep with kajal or eyeliner on.
