He acted in many plays in Indian theatres from 1949 to 1965. When he was 52 years old, he started his film career in 1966 with Basu Bhattacharya’s Teesri Kasam. The period between 1970 and 1990 was very memorable for AK Hangal. During this time, he played important roles in films like Heer Ranjha, Namak Haram, Shaukeen, Sholay, Aaina, Avatar, Arjun, Aandhi, Tapasya, Kora Kagaz and Bawarchi.
