Mumbai. Javed Akhtar is in the news these days for his documentary series ‘Angry Young Man’. His pairing with Salim Khan wrote scripts and dialogues for many blockbuster films. Javed recently talked to his daughter Zoya Akhtar about art, literature and cinema. During this, he said that society took Sridevi and Madhuri Dixit’s talent very lightly. He said that society plays a very deep role in making a star. The image of a star is made by combining morality and aspiration.
Javed Akhtar said at an event organised by Indian Express that talented actresses like Sridevi and Madhuri Dixit were greatly underestimated by the society. People lacked self-reflection. Javed compared them with star actresses like Meena Kumari, Nargis and Waheeda Rehman, who played brilliant roles in films like ‘Sahib Biwi Aur Ghulam’, ‘Mother India’ and ‘Guide’.
Sridevi and Madhuri were not considered strong actresses: Javed Akhtar
Javed Akhtar said that Sridevi and Madhuri were as talented as those legendary actresses but they did not get the same defining roles because the society at that time was not able to identify contemporary actresses. The traditional silent woman was no longer relevant, but there was no clear idea as to who would replace her.
Today there are no strong actresses (women) to represent actresses: Javed
Javed Akhtar stressed, “Society was not clear about who the contemporary woman was. The women of ‘Main Chup Rahungi’ went out, but who came in? No one knows this.” He further said that society is still struggling to find the right representation of today’s women in films. He praised the films of his daughter Zoya Akhtar, who has tried to bring contemporary women to the fore.
