Mumbai. There is a discussion going on all over India about the safety of women. Two big incidents in West Bengal and Kerala have again raised big questions on women’s safety. The rape of a trainee doctor in Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital and the report of retired Justice Hema Committee on the Malayalam film industry opened people’s eyes. Many Bengali artists including Rituparna Sengupta, Parambrata Chattopadhyay and Dev Adhikari, members of the West Bengal Motion Picture Artist Forum, took to the streets and protested.
Not only this, the Women’s Forum for Screen Workers of the Bengali film industry has issued a charter to strengthen the security and respect of women in the workplace. It was signed by 50 artists and people associated with the film industry, including Rituparna, Aparna Sen, Swastika Mukherjee and Paoli Dam. While talking to News 18 Shosha, Rituparna expressed grief over the safety of women. She also revealed an incident that happened to her.
Rituparna Sen said, “The Kolkata rape-murder incident is an eye-opener. We are all very sad, sad and angry. I am very confused right now. Everything has turned so upside down. How long will we live in the shadow of this terror? Educated men are using their strength and position as weapons and committing sexual abuse.”
Rituparna Sen said, “We spend most of our time at our workplace. If we don’t feel safe there, how will we be able to work? Many women are unable to raise their voice because they fear losing their jobs. That’s why I am saying that all this should stop. Men have many places where they can have consensual sex.”
Rituparna Sen started her career with a Bengali TV show in 1989. She too was sexually abused by some big people in her early years. Rituparna said that she faced those people with great courage. Being an outsider, she fought with them. She stood up for her rights and respect. She did not compromise for popularity and stardom.
