New Delhi: Yo Yo Honey Singh has made Punjabi music popular worldwide. His singing style has also become a hit in Bollywood, although his songs have often given rise to controversies. Many people have accused him of hating women. The rapper-singer has now spoken openly about these allegations and questioned why he is often targeted, when big artists like Gulzar have also written such songs.
Speaking to Times of India, Yo Yo Honey Singh said, “I don’t talk rubbish, but I feel I should respond to this. Songs like ‘Bidi Jalaile Jigar Se Piya’ by respected writers like Gulzar have never been questioned. Where is the jigar of a woman? Why is he talking about a woman’s tongue, ‘Zubaan Par Laga Namak Ishq Ka’. I have grown up listening to all this. Why am I the only one wrong?
Honey Singh defends himself
Honey Singh remained silent on these allegations for years. He believes that this made him an easy target. When the singer was questioned about showing women in an objectionable way in his songs, he replied, ‘It doesn’t happen like this.’ He also mentioned the song ‘Choli Ke Peeche Kya Hai’ and said that despite being controversial, the song was accepted and the lyricist was considered a legend. Honey Singh further said, ‘Why is only Honey Singh abused and you call him a legend? I also speak. We are walking with a dual personality in today’s era. We are becoming modern, but there is also backward thinking.’
Honey Singh has been battling poor mental health
Speaking about the dual attitude of today’s world, Honey Singh said, ‘We have a dual personality – being modern yet thinking backwards. Despite chart-topping hits like ‘Angrezi Beat’, ‘Lungi Dance’ and ‘Char Bottle Vodka’, he had to go through a bad phase. He was surrounded by troubles due to drug addiction and poor mental health from 2014 to 2021. Now, he is in the headlines again. A Netflix documentary is being made on Honey Singh, which will give information about his brilliant career and personal battles.
