New Delhi: ‘Where are you going all alone’, ‘You called and I came’, ‘What if I am black, I am a dildo’, ‘Don’t ask the name of the crazy’, ‘In this colour changing world’, ‘Pyaar hua iqraar hua’, ‘Bol Radha bol’, ‘Your going, the desires of the heart are looted’, ‘Yaad karte karte’, ‘Let them stay behind the curtain’, ‘Ajib dastaan hai ye’, ‘Pan khaye saiyaan humarao’, ‘Sarah jamana kehta hai joker’, ‘Chal sanyasi mandir mein’, ‘Ehsaan tera hoga mujh par’ these are the songs of that era when the golden age of Hindi cinema was going on. That is, the 50s and 60s in Hindi cinema. The songs of the films are such that even after 6 decades, if you listen to them today, you will be forced to hum them.
Listening to these songs, you might realise how easy the music must have been, while the creation of these evergreen songs was equally difficult. The composer duo whose brainchild these songs were, changed the direction of Hindi cinema music in that era. This duo was of composer Shankar-Jaikishan. It is said about one of them, Jaikishan, that he was of a romantic nature, so the tune of his nature was clearly visible in romantic songs. This was the reason why Jaikishan, who was fond of dressing up, was called ‘American Lady’ by his close friends.
Shankar-Jaikishan’s first film ‘Barsaat’ was released and both their names were inscribed on the top of Bollywood music. It was said about the Shankar-Jaikishan duo that their godfather in Bollywood was Raj Kapoor, for whose films they used to compose unique music. Later this duo broke up. They started composing music separately, but on Raj Kapoor’s insistence, both of them kept their names same till the end. Whether the music was by Jaikishan or Shankar, the name of the music director in the film was always written as Shankar-Jaikishan.
Friendship started from Prithvi Theater
From 1949 to 1971, this music composer duo created such a buzz that people became crazy about their music direction. The friendship of Shankar Singh Raghuvanshi and Jaikishan Dayabhai Panchal started from Prithvi Theater and this duo decorated so many songs with their tunes in the sky of music that people were stunned. The dispute between Shankar-Jaikishan, Raj Kapoor’s discovery, also happened while working in his film ‘Sangam’. There was a rift between the two over breaking the promise and then both of them separated. There was a song in this film ‘Yeh mera prem patra padhkar ki tum naraj na hona’ for which Shankar and Jaikishan had promised each other that they would never tell anyone who had composed the tune of this song.
A promise broke a friendship
This promise was made by this duo because both of them composed their own tunes separately, but it was a permanent agreement between them that no one would reveal to anyone who composed the tune. Forgetting this, Jaikishan said in a magazine interview that he had composed the tune of this song. Then what happened was that Shankar felt bad about this and both of them parted ways. However, after the efforts of singer Mohammad Rafi, the differences between these two reduced a bit. It is said that this duo used orchestra for the first time in Bollywood songs. Shankar-Jaikishan were awarded the Filmfare Award for Best Music Director a maximum of nine times.
He came to Mumbai to become an actor
One of this pair, Jaikishan Dayabhai Panchal, was born in 1929 in Vansada, Gujarat. Music was not in his family, but music was definitely in Jaikishan’s mind. This was the reason why Jaikishan received formal music education from Sangeet Visharad Vadilji and Prem Shankar Nayak. Jaikishan, who loved music, had a strong desire to become an actor in his heart, so he came to Mumbai with the dream of becoming an actor in Bollywood films and took up the job of a guard here. Jaikishan may have had a rift with Shankar, but even after Jaikishan said goodbye to this world on 12 September 1971, people could not realize for 16 years that Jaikishan was no longer in this world, because in all the films for which Shankar composed music after this, the name of the composer was written as Shankar-Jaikishan.
Jaikishan was a supporter of Lata Mangeshkar
Jaikishan, who looked like a hero, played the harmonium while Hyderabadi Shankar was a tabla player. After Jaikishan’s departure, Shankar spent 16 years in the industry, but his magic did not work like the magic they used to create together. One more thing about Shankar and Jaikishan that very few people know is that Jaikishan always wanted Lata Mangeshkar to sing his songs, while Shankar was always trying to promote the new singer Sharda.
Jaikishan’s tune made Shammi Kapoor a star
Jaikishan’s music made Shammi Kapoor a star. Jaikishan had composed the music for the song in his film ‘Junglee’ which brought him fame. Shammi had the first rights on Jaikishan’s music and if he liked it, he would book it for himself. Shankar-Jaikishan’s music also played a big role in making Rajendra Kumar a silver jubilee star. Shankar-Jaikishan gave music to films like ‘Badal’, ‘Nagina’, ‘Barsaat’, ‘Yehudi’, ‘Anadi’, ‘Dil Apna Aur Preet Parayi’, ‘Jis Desh Mein Ganga Behti Hai’, ‘Jab Pyar Kisi Se Hota Hai’, ‘Junglee’, ‘Sasural’, ‘Asli-Nakli’, ‘Professor’, ‘Dil Ek Mandir’, ‘Amrapali’, ‘Sooraj’, ‘Teesri Kasam’, ‘Brahmachari’, ‘Kanyadan’, ‘Shikar’, ‘Mera Naam Joker’, ‘Andaz’.
