The megastar of the century Amitabh Bachchan was hosting the 15th season of the show ‘Kaun Banega Crorepati’ in the year 2023. During this, he shared a dark part of his life with the audience. There was a time in his life when he could not button his shirt, could not drink water with his hands. It was even difficult for him to blink his eyes on his own.

His condition was due to a rare neuro-muscular disorder. He was suffering from Myasthenia Gravis. The communication between the nerves and muscles of the person affected by this disease breaks down. This weakens the muscles and the condition worsens day by day. Since our nervous system is close to the head and face, its effect also starts from here. First of all, there is a problem of double vision and blinking becomes difficult. Then the voice starts faltering, it becomes difficult to swallow anything. This disease makes a living person almost dead.

Today ‘Health report’ I will talk about the neuro-muscular disorder myasthenia gravis. Also, we will know that-

  • What are the symptoms of this rare disease?
  • How does it happen and who is more at risk?
  • What is its treatment and what to do for quick recovery?

Amitabh Bachchan felt that his film career was over

Big B was scared when he came to know that he was suffering from a rare disease called Myasthenia Gravis in which a person loses control over his muscles.

what is myasthenia gravis

This is an autoimmune condition in which skeletal muscles become weak. Skeletal muscles mean the muscles that are attached to our bones and help us to walk, get up and sit.

Myasthenia gravis usually first affects the muscles of the eyes, face, neck, arms, and legs. It can affect our ability to:

  • Eye movement or blinking
  • keep eyes open for long
  • Facial expressions, that is, all the expressions that come on the face
  • Chewing, swallowing, and talking
  • Raising arms and hand movements
  • sit or stand on a chair

If physical activity is done in this condition, the condition can become more severe, whereas the condition improves with rest. This is a long-term disease in which the junction between our nerves and muscles gets affected. There is no exact cure for it, but effective treatment can reduce the symptoms.

What are the symptoms of this rare disease

Its initial symptoms appear suddenly. If someone is doing hard work, the muscles usually become weak. After this, as soon as one rests, the muscle strength returns. The intensity of muscle weakness often varies from day to day. Most of the people affected by this feel strong in the morning i.e. at the beginning of the day and very weak due to fatigue by the end of the day.

Let us see in the graphic what effect it has on which organ.

How does this disease occur

An autoimmune condition occurs when our body’s immune system mistakenly attacks itself. However, researchers have not yet been able to find out why this happens.

According to a study published in the National Library of Medicine, this condition occurs when some immune system cells in our thymus gland start having trouble identifying things that pose a threat to the body. Sometimes this problem can also be congenital due to genetic changes.

What are the risk factors for myasthenia gravis

This disease usually affects women around the age of 40 and men after the age of 60. However, this condition can develop in anyone at any age.

Let’s look at the graphic to see who is more at risk.

what is its treatment

There is currently no exact cure for the rare neuro-muscular disorder myasthenia gravis. However, some management can be done to reduce its symptoms, such as-

  • Monoclonal Antibodies
  • Plasma Exchange
  • Surgery of the Thymus Gland

Apart from this, some necessary changes can be made in the lifestyle.

  • Take plenty of rest to overcome muscle weakness.
  • If you are suffering from double vision, consult a doctor to apply a patch on your eyes.
  • Avoid stress and excessive heat as both conditions can worsen its symptoms.
  • Consult your doctor about whether some light exercise can help strengthen your muscles.
  • Include plenty of protein and carbohydrates in your meals for extra energy.
  • Get the most laborious tasks done at the beginning of the day.

Some medicines and supplements can worsen the symptoms of this rare disease. Therefore, medical advice is necessary before taking any new medicine. Do not take any medicine on your own.
