What do we do if we have any disease? The answer is to go to the doctor, take some medicines and get well. Now imagine what would happen if these medicines become ineffective. The disease will progress, the body will become weak, and diseases will take over and ultimately death will occur.
This is what is happening in the world right now, about which the World Health Organization (WHO) and the UN are worried. Yesterday on September 26, a high level meeting of the United Nations was held to find a solution to the threat of antimicrobial resistance. It included representatives from all the countries of the world, civil society and international health organizations.
According to a study recently published in the world famous journal ‘The Lancet’, 3 crore 90 lakh people may die in the next 25 years due to antibiotic and antimicrobial resistance.
This question has not been raised for the first time, but the important thing is that the crisis is getting bigger with time. We have already told about this in detail in two of our articles.
So today once againmedical certificate‘I will know why this resistance is arising. Why are medicines becoming ineffective? You will also learn that-
- Who is responsible for this situation?
- What mistakes are people making?
- How much accountability do doctors and the healthcare system have?
- What precautions do people need to take?
Question: Why is the health community of the whole world so worried about the ‘Antibiotic Resistance Study’ published in ‘The Lancet’?
answer: The World Health Organization (WHO) had expressed concern about superbugs some time ago. It was also said that we have to avoid excess use of antibiotics, otherwise a time will come when medicines will completely fail and they will have no effect on diseases.
Now a study published in ‘Lancet’ is saying that 3 crore 90 lakh people may die in the next 25 years due to antimicrobial resistance. This means that many medicines will become ineffective in the coming time. Therefore this can be a big crisis.
Question: Why did this situation arise that the medicines which were made to cure diseases, started becoming ineffective.
answer: The rule of this world is that only that organism survives, which keeps becoming stronger by adapting itself to the new environment. Mosquitoes did the same. First learned to fight with the smoke of mortuary. Then with poisonous incense sticks and then with fast card. They kept increasing their resistance and have now become very powerful.
Similarly, many pathogens have learned to withstand antibiotics. Now medicines have no effect on them. Therefore, the diseases in which earlier these medicines used to show immediate effect are now proving to be ineffective due to the pathogens becoming antimicrobial resistant. See in graphic why this happened.
Question: Why is antimicrobial resistance such a big threat?
answer: In the coming times, the number of such superbugs i.e. pathogens on which all medicines will be ineffective will increase. In such a situation, it will be difficult for humans to face them. Many common diseases will also start causing death. It is also possible that the dangerous situation that scientists are imagining in the future may become even more difficult.
Question: Who is responsible for this situation? People or doctors?
answer: Dr. Vijay Saxena says that both have shared responsibility in this situation arising due to antimicrobial resistance. Governments and healthcare systems around the world are also responsible.
The problem is that today every street is full of quacks, who do not have any proper education or medical degree. Poverty is so high that the number of people going to such doctors is also very high. This is the reason why antibiotics and antimicrobial medicines are being given in very large quantities and with very high potency.
The healthcare system is so expensive that people buy medicines directly from medical stores to avoid long doctor’s expenses. The government and this system are responsible for both these situations.
Question: What mistakes and negligence occurred on the part of common people?
answer: Most people consider not going to the hospital when sick as saving money rather than being careless. They buy medicines by Google themselves or go to the medical store and consume them. The result of these small carelessness is in front of us today.
Question: What is the role of pharmaceutical companies making medicines in this?
answer: Dr. Vijay Saxena says that the biggest crisis in our country at present is that there is no proper structure and system regarding the companies manufacturing medicines. Medicines are being manufactured in bulk and quack doctors are also prescribing them. Here too it is very important to have strict rules and government vigilance.
The World Health Organization had issued an advisory to doctors all over the world to prescribe less medicines and prescribe antibiotics only when absolutely necessary. In June this year, ICMR also said that doctors in India are writing wrong prescriptions to every second patient and giving more medicines than necessary.
Question: The medical community is working from its side to deal with this crisis. What precautions do common people need to take?
answer: In case of slight cold and cough, instead of immediately going to the medical store and getting medicine, we should take rest. Seasonal cold and cough get cured on its own in 2-3 days. Never take antibiotics without doctor’s advice.
Instead of relying on medicines, focus on good health and strong immunity. A good and balanced diet and healthy lifestyle can be a better option.
