Fear of failure- ‘Atticophobia’
There is a word in psychology for the fear of failure – ‘Atychiphobia’. This is a kind of fear. People suffering from this phobia always fear that they might fail. Many times they do not start any new work due to the fear of failure. They are afraid of taking any risk in life and the reason is that they are always afraid of failure.
- People with onychiphobia avoid any situation in which they perceive a possibility of failure, such as an exam or job interview.
- It could also mean that they fear a failed relationship, a failed career, or disappointing others.
- Fear of failure can lead to a variety of emotional and psychological problems, including shame, stress, anxiety, nervousness, or low self-esteem.
- This can have a negative impact on everything from your work performance to your interactions with friends and family members.
The impact of setbacks on mental health and development
Research shows that the feeling of failure can have a very negative impact on mental health. Repeated failure can have a negative impact on a person’s mental and emotional wellbeing.
A study in the International Journal of Novel Research and Development (IJNRD) says that atychiphobia occurs in children when they experience anxiety and fear during defeat. In adults, this fear of failure can also take the form of chronic stress. This can result in many negative effects.
A survey was conducted in America in 2015 on the fear of failure among people. Out of the 1,083 adults surveyed, 31% had a fear of failure. About 4.2% of them were of Indian origin.
How to learn from your failures
It is rare to find success without failure in this world. When you pursue your dreams, you are just as likely to fail as you are to succeed. It is often said that failure does not stop people, but the way people deal with failure is what stops them from moving forward.
- When you face failure, face it boldly and learn from your mistakes.
- Understand that not every idea that comes to your mind will work.
- Take time after a failure to organize your thoughts and figure out what you did wrong.
- When you face failure, ask yourself why it happened. Was it the result of some of your actions?
- Don’t be afraid to take accountability when you’re responsible for a business failure.
- One way to learn from your failures is to embrace change.
- When you fail sometimes you have to change things drastically. Don’t give up if things aren’t going your way and start from the beginning every time.
- Sometimes you need to sit back and look at the changes that need to be made.
- If you know the reasons why you are failing, you will be able to work better on it. This will also help you in future success.
How to recover from failure
Failure is disappointing. However, its effect can be more or less depending on the age. Facing failures in the 20s and 30s can be more difficult because this is the first time we are experiencing big failures. Not being able to perform well in university, losing a job, failing in a competition or not being able to clear a competitive exam even after giving it several times. All these failures disappoint a person. Very few people think of trying again or are even able to do it.
Therefore, the most important thing is to accept failure and try to rise above it and win over it. See the graphic below to know how we should deal with failures to move ahead in life.
