If social media platforms are not able to stop children from logging in, then they will have to pay a fine of 50 million Australian dollars i.e. about Rs 270 crore. Steps related to implementation of the new law will be taken from January and the law will become effective in a year.
Interestingly, YouTube has been exempted from this ban because it is used extensively in schools. On this law, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has said that social media companies have a social responsibility to protect children.
Late Thursday night, Australia’s Senate voted in favor of the government’s legislation. At present, instructions have not been issued as to how the law will be implemented. The Australian PM said that we do not argue that its implementation will be perfect, just as a ban on alcohol for people under 18 does not mean that people under 18 should never drink alcohol. We won’t get it, but we know it’s the right thing to do.
Facebook and Instagram’s parent company Meta has also reacted to the passing of the law. He says that we are concerned about the process in which the law was passed hastily without properly considering the evidence.
