Aamir Khan starrer film Dangal, released in 2016, had made wrestler-politician Babita Phogat a household name.
This film had collected Rs 2 thousand 160 crores worldwide. However, the makers gave only Rs 1 crore to the Phogat family on which this story was inspired.
Received less than 1% of total earnings: Babita Recently, Babita talked about this in an interview given to News 24. When Babita was asked how much money the makers of Dangal gave to the Phogat family, Babita said, ‘The money we got was less than 1% of the entire earning of the film.’

The deal was done during the scripting process The anchor further asked whether the makers had given Rs 20 crore to the Phogat family? In response to this, Babita said, ‘It was also half of 10% of this, around Rs 1 crore. This deal was finalized long before Aamir Khan came on board as a producer, when director Nitish Tiwari’s team was in the scripting process.
Aamir suggested changing the names of the characters: Babita Babita further said- ‘Papa (Mahavir Singh Phogat) had told only one thing to the makers. We need people’s love and respect. Leave everything else.’
The wrestler also told that when Aamir Khan came on board for the film, he had suggested the makers to change the names of the characters but our father was not ready for it.

‘Aamir’s team did not give any answer to father’ Babita further said- ‘When the film became a hit, Papa had suggested Aamir’s team to open a wrestling academy in Haryana. But his team did not respond to his idea.
‘Dangal’ is the country’s biggest global hit. Made under the banner of Siddharth Roy Kapoor’s UTV Motion Pictures and Aamir Khan Productions, the film ‘Dangal’ featured Aamir Khan as Mahavir Phogat, Fatima Sana Shaikh and Zaira Wasim as Geeta Phogat and Sanya Malhotra and Suhani Bhatnagar as Babita Phogat. This film is still the biggest global hit of Hindi cinema.
