anorexia nervosa
In case of body shaming, due to negative body image, we can become victims of diseases like anorexia, bulimia or binge eating. In anorexia one starts eating less due to fear of gaining weight. Whereas in bulimia, a person vomits after eating to avoid weight gain. This causes deficiency of nutrients in the body. Many people may get into the habit of exercising too much.
Body shaming comments such as “Have you lost weight? You look better than before,” can encourage such habits and motivate you to make more efforts to lose weight.
Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD)
Body shaming damages self-image and makes a person more sensitive about their body. This can turn into body dysmorphic disorder, where you become worried about any small thing in your body.
Keep thinking about it all day long. You may constantly look in the mirror or avoid mirrors. This can affect your work in school, college and workplace.
aggressive exercise
Exercising is good for our health, but due to body shaming, a person starts exercising more. This can lead to fatigue, injury and illness. Also a situation like ‘Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport’ (RED-S) may arise. In this, your body does not get enough calories, whatever you get, you eliminate them by working out.
