You must have seen the sets of Himalayas, palaces, deserts, sheeshmahals in films and TV shows. Sometimes you too must have wondered how these sets are made.
In today’s Reel to Real, we talked to art director Chaukas Bhardwaj, material supplier Rajesh Singh and set maker Sujit Sawant to know the bigger truth of this story on the film screen. He told that things like cloth, paper, plywood and thermocol are used in making the set.
He also told that a large amount of Bhabhoot was required for Akshay Kumar’s film Lakshmi. Then Bhabhuta was made from cow dung cakes. Some actors like Salman Khan are also interested in set designing.

During set making, attention has to be paid to location and weather also. Set maker Sujit Sawant says that location and weather also have to be kept in mind while designing any set. For example, if a film is to be shot near the beach of Goa, then such a set will be built here which can withstand strong winds and rain.
At the same time, the sets made under water are such that they dissolve easily in water after shooting and do not harm the environment.
Film set is made from paper, cloth, plywood and thermocol Things like plywood, thermocol, paper, cloth are used in making the set. If the shooting of a scene is to be completed in one day, then the set is made of cloth, paper or thermocol. Whereas when the shooting is for 3-4 days or more, then the set is prepared with the help of POP, iron or plywood. The set is also made from wood.
Pine wood is mostly used so that it does not rot quickly. Overall, how long a set will last depends on the material the set is made from.
Some sets are blown up. Soft material is used in making such sets so that no one gets harmed during the blast.
After making the set, coloring work is done. For example, during the shooting of ad shows, attention is paid to finishing. Here such paint is used, which looks smooth.
Many art directors committed suicide after not receiving payment Chauks told that earlier the art director used to get a good budget, but suddenly the budget has been cut. Due to this many art directors have committed suicide.
Chaukas said- In our field, a fixed budget is given by the production team in the beginning. However, payment is received from the production side after the shooting is over. We do all the work at our own expense first. Directors want the best work from us. Under this pressure, we spend more than the fixed budget, for which payment is often not received. As a result, art directors commit suicide due to financial difficulties. Many such cases have been seen recently.
Bhansali wanted cow dung for the film Rajesh Singh has worked with Sanjay Leela Bhansali. Regarding this he told- I had worked with him in the film Gangubai Kathiawadi and the series Heeramandi. I am also associated with his upcoming film Love and War. Recently he needed more amount of cow dung for plastering. I fulfilled his need in just one hour.
For example, 60 liters of apex color was required in Hiramandi. At that time I had only 40 liters of Apex color. I had arranged the remaining 20 liters from another place.
In the movie Lakshmi, Bhabhoot was created from boiled cow dung. Rajesh Singh has also worked in Akshay Kumar starrer film Lakshmi. He told- A huge amount of money was required for the song Bam Bhole of the film. According to the scene, I had less stock of Bhabhoot. Then I prepared ash by burning cow dung cake, which was used in place of Bhabhut.
Himalaya’s set was made of POP and thermocol Art director Chaukas Bhardwaj says- I had worked in the TV show Devon Ke Dev Mahadev. The Himalayas were to be shown in this. The director’s demand was that the Himalayas should look absolutely real. I had coordinated with suppliers from as far as China for artificial trees and plants. However, it did not work out here. Then we ordered some items from other places. POP and thermocol were also used in making Himalaya.
Salman Khan is interested in set designing Chaukas told that some actors are involved in set designing. He said- I had worked with Salman Khan in the film Hello Brother. He liked my work very much. Many times he also gave tips in set designing.
There are some other actors, who do not give tips, but praise the set designing. At the same time, some actors just act and go away.
