Citroen Basalt has become the safest coupe SUV in India. It has received a 4-star safety rating in crash tests from the Bharat New Car Assessment Program (BNCAP or Bharat NCAP). In the crash test, the car scored 26.19 out of 32 points for adult safety and 35.90 out of 49 points for child safety.
The company launched this car in August this year. It was the fourth vehicle to be tested at BNCAP after Tata Safari, Harrier Nexon and Punch. The starting ex-showroom price of the SUV-coupe is Rs 7.99 lakh, which goes up to Rs 13.57 lakh in the top variant. The car is equipped with advanced safety features with 6 airbags.
Crash test process
1. For the test, 4 to 5 human-like dummies are seated in the car. There is a child dummy in the back seat, which is fixed to the child ISOFIX anchor seat.2. The vehicle is collided with an offset deformable barrier (hard object) at a fixed speed to see how much damage is caused to the vehicle and the dummy. This is done in three ways.
- In the frontal impact test, the car is hit with a barrier at a speed of 64 kmph.
- In the side impact test, the vehicle is hit with a barrier at a speed of 50 kmph.
- In the pole side impact test, the car will be seen hitting a pole at a fixed speed. If the car achieves 3 star rating in the first two tests, the third test is conducted.
2. In the test, it is seen how much damage was done to the dummy after the impact, whether the airbags and safety features worked or not. Rating is given on the basis of all these.
