This hectic life, rapidly changing lifestyle and wrong eating habits have increased the risk of many diseases. One of these diseases is cardiac arrest. In the last few years, cases of cardiac arrest have increased so much that a fear has arisen in the minds of people. It is a matter of concern that even good youth are becoming its victims.

We have seen many such videos on social media, in which a youth suddenly dies of cardiac arrest while dancing or working out in the gym.

However, there is a method which, if done immediately, increases the chances of saving a cardiac arrest patient. In the language of medicine, it is called CPR i.e. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

According to the American Heart Association’s ‘Heart and Stroke Statistics 2022’ report, cardiac arrest is a public health crisis. More than 356,000 out-of-hospital cardiac arrests occur each year in the United States, approximately 90% of which are fatal. The surprising thing is that every year in America, more than 23,000 children and youth are falling victim to it.

According to the famous medical journal ‘De Lascent’, every year in India, about 5-6 lakh people die due to sudden cardiac arrest (SCD) and a large number of them are people of 50 years of age or less.

It is important for everyone to know about CPR, so that anyone can give first aid to a cardiac arrest patient. Regarding this, we talked to Dr. Gaurang Majumdar, Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgeon of Medanta Hospital, Lucknow and he answered all the questions related to this.

Question: What is CPR?

answer: CPR i.e. Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation is an emergency life saving procedure, which is done when the heart stops beating. CPR can help a person survive cardiac arrest. Even if you don’t know how to give CPR, you can help someone just by using your hands. For this you need to take immediate action.

Question: How does CPR work inside the body?

answer: The job of the heart is to maintain blood circulation in the entire body. This is a mechanically muscular pump, which pumps blood 60 to 70 times every minute and supplies blood with pressure to the entire body. Blood contains oxygen and nutrition and to stay alive, every cell of the body needs oxygen and nutrition through blood.

Blood does the work of delivering oxygen and nutrition to all these cells. The work of sending that blood to all the cells is done by the central pump i.e. heart. This is called heart pumping function.

Once the blood goes everywhere in the body, then the oxygen and nutrition gets removed from that blood, after which the blood becomes black. The same blood goes to the lungs to turn it red again by giving it oxygen, so as soon as the person breathes, that black blood turns red. Overall, understand that the heart and lungs work together as a unit to keep a person alive. The first word in CPR is ‘cardiac’ i.e. heart. The second is ‘pulmonary’ meaning lungs. Both of these are very important for living life.

Suppose for some reason the heart stops pumping, then blood will not flow to the body and when blood will not circulate then who will provide oxygen and nutrition. Although oxygen is very important for every organ, but the most important thing in it is the brain, which is a very sensitive organ.

If the brain does not get blood, the person will go into a permanent coma. After the heart stops, the brain first dies. In such a situation, to keep the brain alive, we have to start the heart immediately, but the heart has stopped. In such a situation, we will have to operate the heart mechanically.

For this, we give external compression to the heart i.e. we press the chest with our hands. Due to this, the blood inside the heart will go to the whole body, some will also go to the lungs. But if cardiac arrest has occurred, even the lungs will not function, so the person will have to be given oxygen through mouth-to-mouth breathing.

Give chest compression four or five times and blow once. By doing compression, the blood will go to the whole body and we are giving our oxygen to that blood. This process has to be done continuously until the heart starts working.

Question: What is the difference between cardiac arrest and heart attack?

answer: Cardiac arrest means the heart is unable to pump and expel blood. Due to the pumping of the heart, blood goes to the entire body and once the heart pumps, 60 to 70 ML of blood goes to the entire body. This is called ejection. When the heart stops ejecting, it is called cardiac arrest.

Heart attack means blockage in the tube supplying blood to the heart. Due to sudden blockage of the duct, the heart muscles do not get blood and those muscles get damaged. This is called heart attack. Heart attack does not mean arrest, but heart attack may or may not lead to arrest.

Question: Can CPR be given in heart attack also?

answer: No, CPR is given only in cardiac arrest. CPR is not required for heart attack because even though our blood pressure is maintained and heart beat is going on, heart attack still occurs.

Question: So how to know that cardiac arrest has occurred?

answer: In case of heart attack, the patient will tell that he is having pain and sweating, then take him to the hospital immediately, but in case of cardiac arrest, the patient will immediately fall at the same place and become unconscious. In such a situation, CPR should be given immediately by making the patient lie down on a flat surface. Giving CPR wrong will not do anything, but not giving it will definitely make a difference.

Question: How long after arrest are there chances of giving CPR?

answer: CPR should be started within three minutes of becoming unconscious. If it is delayed then the brain becomes dead. Even if the heart starts working again after three minutes of CPR, the person will still go into a coma. There is no use of it. Therefore, the sooner CPR is given, the better the recovery will be.

Question: Do doctors also give CPR?

answer: Doctor Gaurang Majumdar says that doctors also give CPR in the hospital. This results in 60 to 70% recovery, but there is 50% more struggle in roadside CPR because people do not have perfect knowledge about it.

Question: For how long does CPR have to be given?

answer: Until the heart starts working again. With CPR you can keep a person alive for about 2 hours.
