On this day, 20 October 1995, 29 years ago, Shahrukh Khan and Kajol starrer film ‘DDLJ’ was released. Only after the Karva Chauth sequence shown in this film, this festival started being celebrated on a grand scale across the country. Today, on the 29th anniversary of the film, Dainik Bhaskar spoke to the film’s dialogue writer Javed Siddiqui. Read what he said…
Shahrukh and Kajol starrer ‘DDLJ’ was the highest grossing film of 1995.
This was not a film, it was a miracle: Javed Siddiqui ‘DDLJ’ means ‘Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge’. It was not just a film, it was a miracle. Aditya Chopra was directing this film alone. He was taking care of every detail himself.
Since Punjab was in the film, Karva Chauth was also kept there. In this sequence, it was to be shown that Kajol i.e. Simran has considered Raj i.e. Shahrukh as her husband.
But the family members are getting her engaged to someone else and making her observe Karva Chauth fast.
DDLJ dialogue writer Javed Siddiqui.
This scene of the film remains memorable and trendsetter even today Meanwhile, Simran has taken a promise from Raj that she will break her fast by drinking water from his hand. So what trick should be adopted here so that respect can be maintained in front of the family members and the fast of Simran can also be completed by drinking water from the hand of Raj.
Chopra here shows Simran pretending to fall unconscious, which Raj holds and in the hurry no one remembers that Raj has given her water to drink. Today Kajol is a mother of young children and Shahrukh is about to touch the age of 60. This film and its Karva Chauth scene is still young and memorable. This is called trend setting.
The scene in the film in which Raj breaks Simran’s fast by giving her water to drink.
Also boosted the trend of men fasting In answer to why this film and Karva Chauth became such a hit, it can be said that Kajol’s art of getting into the character and Shahrukh’s habit of hard work made it easy.
Interestingly, this film also boosted the trend of men observing fast. That is, on one hand Simran observes the fast while being hungry and thirsty, while on the other hand Raj also supports her by not eating anything.
After the trend of Karva Chauth increased with ‘DDLJ’, it started being celebrated in a grand manner in other states also. In a way, it is a celebration of love, which no one has any objection to celebrating.
(As told by Javed Siddiqui to Shayda)
After the release of this film, the pairing of Shahrukh and Kajol became superhit.
Even today, DDLJ’s song is played on the day of fasting. Even though the film ‘Dil Wale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge’ was released 29 years ago, its song is still played on the day of fasting. This song is- ‘By drinking water from your hand, I will become a queen from the maid…’.
This song was sung by Manpreet Kaur and Yash Chopra’s wife Pamela Chopra. Its lyrics were written by Anand Bakshi.
