Question- Why do road accidents increase in winter?
answer- A major reason for the increase in road accidents in winter is mist and fog, in which visibility is very low. Due to this, the driver does not see the vehicle ahead after a few meters, which becomes the cause of accidents.
Especially in some states of North India, there is dense fog in the months of December and January, in which visibility reaches zero. In such a situation, news of road accidents comes to light every day. Apart from this there are many other reasons also. See it in the graphic below-
Question- What things should be kept in mind before driving in fog?
answer- No one wants to step out of the house in the bitter cold. However, some people have to drive several kilometers every day to go to office or for their important work. In such a situation, driving on dense fog and slippery roads is no less than a challenge.
Hands and feet start becoming numb in cold. Cold weather also affects your car. Therefore, it is important to check some things before taking your vehicle out of the house. With this, road accidents can be avoided to a great extent. Understand this from the graphic given below-
Question- What things should be kept in mind while driving in fog or mist?
answer- Fog is the most challenging weather for driving. Nothing is clearly visible on the road in this season. Many times nothing is visible on the road after 1-2 meters. Only fog is visible on the road.
Therefore, extra caution should be taken while driving in this season. Especially when you are passing through a highway, expressway or signal free road. For this, some important tips related to road safety should be adopted, so that we can drive safely and avoid road accidents. Understand this from the graphic below-
Let us now understand some of the points given in the graphic in detail.
drive in your lane
Driving lanes on national highways are designated according to two-wheeler, four-wheeler or larger vehicles. Its importance increases further when visibility is reduced during fog. Accidents can be reduced to a great extent by moving vehicles in designated lanes. Therefore always drive in your own lane. With this, you can not only drive safely but can also ensure the safety of other drivers.
Keep headlights on low beam during fog
During fog, the headlights of the vehicle should be kept on low-beam. Low-beam headlights help illuminate between 50 and 75 meters in front of the vehicle. At the same time, the light spreads on the high-beam, due to which nothing is visible in front in the fog.
Keep the defogger on to prevent fogging of mirrors.
In winter, the temperature outside and the temperature inside the car are different. Due to this, fog starts accumulating on the wind screen of the vehicle. This reduces visibility. Defogger prevents fogging on mirrors. Therefore, defogger should be kept on while driving in fog.
Do not try to overtake
It is not right to show haste in fog. Therefore, move in your lane only. Do not try to overtake other vehicles.
Maintain sufficient distance from vehicles moving ahead
During dense fog, maintain more distance than usual from the vehicles moving ahead, so that you get enough chance to recover if the vehicle in front applies sudden brakes. Many times accidents also happen due to this.
Question- At what speed is it safe to drive during fog?
answer- Traffic in-charge Veer Bahadur Singh says that in heavy fog, the vehicle should not be driven more than the speed of 40 kilometers per hour.
Question- What kind of mistakes should not be made while driving in fog?
answer- Some mistakes should not be made while driving in fog. Such as-
- Avoid parking your vehicle on the roadside in fog.
- If there is any emergency then definitely turn on parking and hazard lights.
- Switch on the indicator 10 seconds before turning a turn.
- Keep the windshield and windows of the vehicle clean.
