New Delhi. Neena Gupta was one of the best actresses of her time, but she did not get the position she deserved in that era. When daughter Masaba expressed her desire to enter the world of acting in front of Neena Gupta, she flatly refused. These days Masaba Gupta is enjoying her pregnancy. Recently, while talking about not making a career in acting, she said that her mother had flatly refused her to enter this industry.
Explaining the reason behind her mother’s thinking, Masaba said that the way films were run in those days was very different. Because of this, the actors had to stay within a lot of limits. While participating in a podcast, she says, ‘She did not allow me to become an actress. I remember Anupam Kher has an acting school in Mumbai, and I said I want to study acting because I want to become an actress, and she told me not to even think about it. You know your look is artistic, international and almost non-Indian. You will be put in a box and the industry was very different at that time’.
Masaba Gupta is going to become a mother soon.
Neena Gupta did not want her daughter to be disappointed
The designer-actress further said, ‘My mother said you will get disappointed in films, you should do something that requires your mind and which you can do for the rest of your life. She said, hey, you want to try SNDT? Admissions are open. I went there and I filled my form. My test grade marks were enough to get that form. My marks were good and they gave me admission. They said, okay, give the entrance exam in a week’.
Opinion on nepotism
Talking about nepotism, Masaba says that it is not just a part of the film industry but every industry. She said, ‘Nepotism is there in every industry. A lawyer’s son becomes a lawyer. A doctor’s son becomes a doctor, and their father recommends them. This is the way of the world. It is not just in India but all over the world. Yes, but sometimes I feel that due to nepotism in Bollywood, the wrong people get opportunities.’ (With IANS input)
