Producers are involved in every department of film making. The most difficult task for a producer is to handle people and collect funds. How does a producer select a story and produce a film? What kind of challenges come from the shooting of the film till its release. We’ll find out in this week’s episode of Reel to Real.
To understand the entire process of film making, we spoke to filmmakers Vivek Sharma and Sunil Darshan.
Producer is the head of the film
The entire responsibility of any film rests with the producer. The work of a producer is not just about funding. Rather, the producer is involved in every department of film making.
The responsibility of casting the actor for the film rests on both the director and the producer.
Casting of actors for the film is done by both the director and producer. Although usually there is a contract between the actor and the producer. It is mentioned in the contract that their approximate payment will be made before dubbing. But 20 percent is withheld so that they can attend promotional events. The producer also manages the payments of the rest of the crew etc.
The producer gets a share of the film’s excess earnings.
When films earn more than the price fixed in the agreement, that earning is called over flow. Like the film RRR had earned around Rs 500 crores even before its release and the total collection of the film was around Rs 1100 crores. Apart from the distributor, some part of the earnings of this overflow also goes to the film producer. What percentage share the producer will have is already written in the agreement.
How does the producer share in the earnings of the films?
When the producer sells the film to the distributor, he has 50% ownership rights. If the investor has invested Rs 20 crore in the film, then first we will return Rs 20 crore to him. After that he gives 50% of the net profit to his investors.
Producers also earn money from different rights of films
Nowadays there are many rights of films. Movies are dubbed in regional languages. Films also have remake rights, copy rights and digital rights. Generally producers earn from theatre, OTT (digital rights) and satellite rights. The producer sends the dubbing rights. The films shown in flights lasting 7-8 hours have separate rights. In this way, 30-35 rights are acquired, from which the producer earns profit throughout his life.
However, many things depend on mutual consent. Suppose a film becomes a big hit, then the producer decides how much profit he should get. There is such a strong bonding between the distributor and the theater owner that they try to get a lesser share in the profits from the producer.
Along with the producer, the distributor also suffers loss.
If the film flops, the producer suffers a lot of loss. Home offices are also sold to return the investors’ money. Many times the distributor also suffers huge losses. The distributor sometimes buys the film at a higher price. Which cannot be recovered. The theater owner also suffers loss. Many times it happens that if the film does not work, then even the rent for the AC of the theater is not paid.
Fixed amount anytime on agreement Does not happen
The agreement is made according to the percentage. Accordingly, the distributor gives profit to the producer. The profit of the film is shared by the combination of investor, producer and distributor. Suppose an investor has invested Rs 100 crore in the film, then the producer will first return the capital amount to the investor. The distributor will send the percentage of his profit to the producer. The producer will share the profit from the same with the investor.
In today’s times the condition of producers is the worst.
Vivek Sharma told that becoming a producer in today’s era is a very difficult task. Earlier it was easier for producers to collect funding. The fees of actors are also not very high. But in today’s times, the fees of actors are very high. Secondly, actors also impose their demands on producers. Earlier there was no interference from actors or anyone else in the production work. Although now everything is the opposite.
Producers ban actors in South
However, producers meet each other in Hyderabad and share their experiences with each other. Their producer lobby is very strong. If an actor or actress harasses a producer, he is banned. Therefore the actors there are under the control of the producer.
Now it is wrong for stars to ask for profit from films
Vivek says that nowadays stars have started demanding a share in the profits of films. This is a very wrong practice. If the stars are asking for a share in the profit then they should also bear the loss. The owner of the film is the producer, not the star. The star is a spokesperson for the story.
Shahrukh did not take 25 lakhs from the distributor
Shahrukh Khan’s film ‘Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani’ did not work. This film was distributed by Yash Raj in Mumbai. Here the film made only Rs 3 lakh profit, but the film did not run in other centres. Rajasthan distributor Raj Bansal had taken the film for Rs 25 lakh, but he suffered a loss.
When Shahrukh Khan came to know about this, he did not take 25 lakhs from the distributor. Raj Bansal felt that Shahrukh got angry. That’s why did not take money. Shahrukh explained to him that you are like our family member. You should not suffer any loss, I will manage in the next film. After that Shahrukh Khan had increased Rs 25 lakh in the film ‘Main Hoon Na’. The distributor had earned well from that film.
Earlier producers were highly respected
Filmmaker Sunil Darshan said- Earlier producers were respected a lot. Producer did not just mean that he was collecting funds for films. The producer was involved in every genre of filmmaking. Now with the arrival of corporate companies a lot has changed. Now stars have started deciding everything.
