In the year 1975, when director Manmohan Desai was sitting and reading the newspaper like every morning, he read a news in the newspaper in which a man had left his three sons in the park and the father had committed suicide leaving the children there. With this idea, he went to his friend writer Prayag Raj, then they both worked together on the film and the three characters were created on the basis of a Hindu, a Muslim and a Christian.
