‘I was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis when I was 3 years old. Doctors had said that I would not be able to live long. He couldn’t even walk on his own. However, somehow my mother’s hard work paid off and I was able to make a name for myself in the wrestling world.
This is what wrestler and actor Sangram Singh has to say. Seeing him in his childhood, a wrestling mentor had said that if he would be able to wrestle, it would be no less than a miracle. What he said was also correct. After defeating the incurable disease, Sangram first entered the world of wrestling and then earned name in films.
He has also worked in the police department for some time. Also became a part of reality shows like Nach Baliye and Bigg Boss.

Arthritis occurred at the age of 3, doctors said – chances of survival very less When Sangram was young, he suffered from a serious illness. Regarding this he said, ‘I was 3 years old when I was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis. No one could understand this disease for a long time. Some people used to say that there were worms in the stomach while others used to say that it was a different disease. Along with doctors, treatment was also done by Vaidya.
For treatment, she used to walk 2 to 3 kilometers with her mother in her lap. There was no money for any car or taxi. With time the pain in my body increased. The body became thin. He couldn’t even eat food by himself. Mother used to carry me in her lap and take her for daily chores.
Somehow, after collecting money, my family took me to a hospital in Delhi. The doctor there said that this disease leads to death. There are very few chances of its survival. Even after hearing all this, my family members did not give up. Due to his hard work and God’s blessings, I recovered and stood on my own feet.
Children used to make fun of illness in school Sangram further said, ‘Today I have defeated this disease, but there was a time when people used to make fun of my weakness. People used to laugh in school also. Things like wheelchairs were not common at that time. He somehow walked with the support of wood. While walking, it felt as if thorns were pricking my feet.
Saw wrestling in the village and decided to become a wrestler. ‘One day I saw wrestling in the village. Someone took me to the arena through Vaishakhi. There was arrangement for milk, curd and ghee for the wrestlers to eat in the arena. Along with this, one also got money and a lot of respect. I was very impressed in my heart. I started thinking that I wish I could also play wrestling. My elder brother used to go to the Akhara.
I told a mentor standing there that I also want to learn wrestling. They made fun of me and insulted me. Said that if you will ever be able to play wrestling then any child in the country will be able to participate in wrestling.
Sangram said that sometimes he started losing courage due to these words of people, but his mother always boosted his courage. Mother was sure that despite such a dangerous disease, he could wrestle. To keep Sangram’s body healthy, mother used to massage him several times a day.
Won the first medal under All India Police Games Sangram said, ‘Days passed. My illness got better with each day. With the efforts of my mother and my own hard work, I prepared myself for wrestling. However, for this I needed a better platform. I tried for the post of constable in Delhi Police, in which I was also successful. After this, he won the first medal in the wrestling competition held under the All India Police Games.
Ad worth Rs 2.5 crores rejected to avoid wrong message among fans ‘It is about 2012-13. I had made a decent name in wrestling. One day I came across an advertisement for a cold drink. At that time, Rs 2.5 crore was being given for a 3 year deal. I refused I thought that if I advertise this, what message will it send to the village children who want to take up wrestling after seeing me?
When I rejected the ad, the area manager felt bad. His ego got hurt. He told me that they have big names like Sachin, Dhoni and Salman, then why am I showing so much arrogance. I said that they are all like my brothers and I respect them, but I will not add cold drinks at any cost.
Regarding his entry into films, Sangram Singh said, ‘When I used to do sports, there was not much money in this field at that time. Meanwhile, Endemol (production house) was making a wrestling show. I also associated with that show. I was getting very little money there. However, the benefit of staying there was that I got into professional wrestling. From there I started getting recognition. Became the world’s best wrestler. Through that I got a chance to participate in the reality show Survivor India. It was there that he met Payal, whom he later married.
Then film offers started coming. Although I also rejected many offers. I play the same character in the film, so that a social message can be sent. I believe in playing powerful roles only.
Sangram Singh was seen in Bigg Boss-7 Sangram Singh was also seen in the reality show Bigg Boss-7. Regarding this he said, ‘I met Salman sir on the sets of this show. He used to talk to me in a desi style.
Prime Minister had invited to Parliament While working in reality shows and films, Sangram could not distance himself from wrestling. In 2015, he again returned to wrestling. He won the WWP Commonwealth Heavyweight Championship in 2015 and 2016.
He said- I realized that without wrestling I am nothing. That’s why I came back to it. Then I got a chance to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He had invited me to congratulate me on the victory in Parliament. It was an unforgettable experience. His perspective was unique. He knew many things about me.

Married to Payal Rohatgi, can’t become a mother, actress Actresses Payal Rohatgi and Sangram dated each other for almost 12 years. Then they got married in 2022. After marriage, both of them gave reception parties in Mumbai and Delhi. About his love story, Sangram said, ‘We took time to know each other. When I came to know that Payal could not become a mother, I still decided to get married. What a difference it would make. If we don’t have children, we will adopt. However, this is not permitted by the family. If everything goes well then we can take the help of surrogacy.
