New Delhi. These days Anubhav Sinha’s series ‘IC814: The Kandahar Hijack’ based on a true incident is in the news. Recently, Naseeruddin Shah made such a statement about the plane hijacking incident that happened in the year 1999, which is being criticized. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Shiv Sena have strongly condemned Naseeruddin Shah’s statement, in which he expressed the fear of a wave of Islamophobia rising.
Shiv Sena spokesperson Krishna Hegde said that Naseeruddin Shah has a habit of repeatedly making controversial statements, which create doubts in the minds of people. He said, ‘It is shocking that Naseeruddin Shah is not talking about the safety and lives of 200 passengers on IC 814 who were kidnapped in Kandahar, but is talking about Islamophobia after living among the rich and famous in India for 74 years.
‘We don’t look at everything from a religious perspective’
Maharashtra’s Culture and Forest Minister and BJP leader Sudhir Mungantiwar reacted to Naseeruddin Shah’s statement. He said on Wednesday that it does not matter to him what the actor has said, but the issue is that cinema should present a clear and true image of the facts. He said that it has to be paid attention to who the terrorists were. We do not look at everything from the perspective of religion, but who has committed the crime, it has to be seen.
‘The sentiments of a large group have been hurt’
Apart from this, citing freedom of speech and expression, he said, ‘For years, some people have used their constitutional right to show such things which have hurt the sentiments of a large group, but when these things go against them, they start pleading for mercy and the constitution.’
Which statement of Naseeruddin Shah caused uproar?
On Tuesday, the team of ‘IC814: The Kandahar Hijack’ held a press conference. During that time, he shared his experience recalling the plane hijacking incident. He said, ‘When this incident happened, I was about 50 years old. I remember that I was very upset because I thought this would ignite another wave of Islamophobia. Fortunately, this did not happen. I remember that I was very worried about the situation and what would happen now. I cannot tell why I felt this way, but I definitely felt that the passengers and the pilot must have gone through a terrible time. I remember that I felt this way.’
Netflix made changes to the series amid controversy
Apart from Naseeruddin Shah, stars like Pankaj Kapoor, Vijay Verma, Dia Mirza, Arvind Swami and Dia have worked in IC-814: The Kandahar Hijack. However, a section of the audience started demanding to boycott the series for hiding the real identity of the terrorists involved in the 1999 plane hijack incident. Amidst the growing controversy, Netflix has decided to make changes in the series and show the real names of the Pakistani terrorists.
