Today is Independence Day. On this day we got freedom from British rule. Freedom is the most precious thing. It is the basic condition of being a human. Its importance is known only to those who have paid the price for freedom.

Like the freedom of the country, freedom of society, freedom of thoughts, freedom to think and take decisions, there is another freedom which is very important. That is freedom in relationships.

But the concept of freedom in a relationship is a little complicated because it is a beautiful balance of freedom and bondage. There is a space between being free from bondage and being free to be bound, where the foundation of relationships is laid on the basis of equality and freedom.

Growing up children often demand more freedom from their parents. Juniors demand freedom in front of the boss in the office while partners in romantic relationships demand space. In some marital relationships, partners even accuse each other of not giving them freedom.

Today in the relationship column, we will try to understand the importance and need of freedom in a relationship. Along with this, we will also know how to maintain the right balance between freedom and dependence in a relationship.

Why is independence so important in a relationship?

According to a report by marriage.com, freedom is very important in a relationship because it allows both partners to express their feelings openly. Freedom increases trust and understanding in the relationship and both parties are able to feel comfortable with each other.

If all parties in a relationship get the necessary freedom, then it can have these benefits for the relationship and personal well-being:

  • Relationship satisfaction- Freedom increases satisfaction in the relationship because both parties can express their thoughts and feelings openly. In such a situation, there is no complaint in their mind.
  • Personal growth of partners- If the necessary freedom is provided in the relationship, then the partners are able to pay better attention to themselves. Freedom motivates a person to fulfill his dreams and goals.
  • Mutual trust- Freedom also increases trust in a relationship. Once both partners start respecting each other’s freedom, then there is no longer any doubt or suspicion about each other in their minds.

If you want to see your partner in real life then give him/her freedom

It is said that if you want to know the real nature of a person, then give him the reins of power. Similarly, whether it is a child or a romantic partner or a junior in the office, if you want to see him in his true form and full potential, then you will have to give him freedom in the relationship.

For example, if you put too many restrictions on a child, it is possible that he may never be able to express his hidden talent. Similarly, a junior in the office may keep a brilliant idea in his mind because he does not feel free enough to express it.

Therefore, it is important that in every kind of relationship, all parties are given the necessary freedom so that they can love or work in their true form and to their full potential and fulfill their responsibilities.

There is a limit to freedom in a relationship, do not be free from the relationship

While expecting freedom in a relationship, it is important to keep in mind that the foundation of a relationship is laid by mutual agreement. In such a situation, if both parties insist 100% on their freedom, then the relationship will cease to exist.

It is also important to keep in mind that freedom in a relationship should not, in any situation, be so liberal that it inspires us to become free from the relationship.

For example, if a teenage boy wants the freedom to come home late, he should talk to his parents. He should tell them about his needs. Also, he should assure them that there is no danger in staying out for a while.

But if this freedom is taken in a negative way, then the child will refuse to accept every good or bad thing of his parents and will plead for his freedom. But in this situation, the child is not getting freedom in the relationship but he is getting freedom from the relationship itself. He is breaking the relationship.

Similarly, the demand for freedom in the office can lead the manager and the employee on different paths. This can end their team approach.

Achieve freedom while keeping the bond of relationship strong

After understanding the importance of freedom in a relationship and the need for positive dependency, the question arises as to how to achieve such freedom that the bond of the relationship remains strong and one’s personal space does not seem to shrink.

According to a report by the Gottman Institute, these measures can prove to be helpful in achieving freedom in a relationship-

  • Don’t hesitate to spend some time alone. Enjoy your me-time.
  • Start valuing your personal space.
  • Express your likes and dislikes openly. Do not hesitate to follow your hobbies.
  • Maintain your personality. Give up the idea of changing yourself to please someone else. If the demand for change comes from within you, then it is a different matter.
  • Apart from your relationship, increase your contact with friends. Try to enjoy your social life. Avoid the thought of breaking all other relationships for the sake of one relationship.
  • Be vocal about your needs.
  • Continue to dream and talk about it with your partner.
  • Give importance to your health and lifestyle. Encourage your partner to do the same.
