If we have data related to any problem, then it becomes easy to find a solution to that problem. This also helps in identifying the problem accurately. The cases of road accidents are increasing a lot in the country, but do we have any such accurate data, which can help us to reach the bottom of this problem. Such as-

  • Are there any specific areas where road accidents occur more frequently?
  • Are there more accidents on a particular type of road?
  • Do road accidents occur more at a particular time?

If we know that these reasons are responsible for road accidents, then that reason can be identified and improved. The central government is preparing to introduce road safety audit to know the answers to these questions.

so today news of need I will talk about what is a road safety audit? Also, we will know that

  • How will the road safety audit work?
  • How can this help in reducing road accidents?

Question- What is Road Safety Audit?

answer- Road safety audit is an attempt to identify where, at what time and for what reasons more road accidents are happening. Through audit, such black spots will be eliminated where the risk of accidents is high.

Question- How will the road safety audit work?

Answer- The central government will take the help of students of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) to reduce road accidents. The students will conduct road safety audit of expressways and national highways and give suggestions. Through this, efforts will be made to identify blind spots and black spots on the roads and eliminate them.

Blind spots are those points where the visibility of vehicles coming from the front is low. Black spots are those points where most accidents occur. Union Road and Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari has expressed hope that road safety audit will reduce road accidents.

Question: How many people become victims of road accidents every year due to violation of traffic rules?

answer- Speaking at the World Conference on Injury Prevention and Safety Promotion (SAFETY 2024) held recently in New Delhi, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari said that in India, more people lose their lives in road accidents than due to war, insurgency and Naxalism.

According to government data, in the year 2022, more than four and a half lakh people became victims of road accidents across the country, in which more than one and a half lakh people died.

Question: What are the reasons behind most road accidents in the country?

answer- In the last few years, there has been a rapid increase in the number of road accidents in the country. The biggest reason for this is the lack of awareness among people about traffic rules.

Statistics show that 70% of the road accident deaths in the country in 2022 were due to over speeding. Apart from this, thousands of people lost their lives due to drunk driving and using mobile while driving.

Question: On which roads do drivers need to be most careful?

answer- Most road accidents in the country happen on national highways. Actually, driving on national highways is completely different from driving on other roads. Usually, there are a total of 6 lanes on both sides of the highway.

  • The leftmost lane is for slow-moving vehicles like trucks, buses, containers etc.
  • The middle lane is for high-speed vehicles.
  • The third lane on the right is for overtaking. After overtaking, the drivers return to the middle lane.

Most accidents are seen on the National Highway due to lack of awareness about one’s lane. In most road accidents, it has been seen that small vehicle drivers drive in the second or third lane as soon as they come on the highway, due to which they are unable to estimate the speed of the vehicle coming from behind.

Question: Where do most road accidents occur in the country?

answer- According to government data, about 75% of road accidents occur in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Rajasthan and Bihar. These states have proved to be the most risky in terms of road accidents from 2018 to 2022. However, the highest number of deaths in these accidents have been seen in Uttar Pradesh.
