Which is your favourite and worst day of the entire week? To find out this, British market research and data analyst firm YouGOV conducted a survey. Only 4% of the people surveyed said Monday was their favourite day. Friday, Saturday and Sunday were at the top of the list of favourite days.
But when asked about the worst day of the week, 60% people named Monday.
For office goers, Monday is nothing less than a nightmare. If you have to go to office after the relaxation of Saturday and the fun of Sunday, then that day will definitely be included in the list of ‘waste’ days.
But the working class has found a cure for this fear of Monday. This is the new trend of office working, i.e. ‘hybrid working’.
New research shows that hybrid working is beneficial for both the company and the employee. Today we will try to understand the new hybrid work culture in workplace relationships.
Every fourth employee in the world works in hybrid mode
According to the ‘Working from Home Around the Globe: 2023’ survey conducted on 40 thousand workers from 37 countries including India in 2023, every fourth employee in the world is working in hybrid mode. Also, the number of employees working in hybrid mode is increasing day by day.
Resignations decrease in hybrid working, institution benefits
The trend of work from home increased during the Covid-19 period. Initially, it was said to be beneficial for companies because working from home was saving a lot of money on maintaining the office.
But as soon as the lockdown ended, the era of work from home also ended. Work from home was seen as a sign of reduced productivity, lack of team approach and lack of new ideas.
On the other hand, employees who had taken advantage of working from home during the lockdown were not mentally prepared to resume office working. In such a situation, the trend of hybrid working started in offices across the world, which is being described as the main working culture of the future.
Hybrid working means working from home for some days and going to the office for some days. But many types of it have also developed according to the rules and regulations and needs of the office. Generally, 4 types of hybrid working are seen-
- Structured Week- This is the most common hybrid working pattern. In this, different days of the week are pre-determined for office and work from home.
- Hybrid at Will- In this type of hybrid working, employees decide to work from home or office as per their convenience.
- Manager Scheduling- In this type of hybrid working, team managers decide when to call employees to the office and when to allow them to work from home.
- Hybrid Mix- This is a combination of all other hybrid working.
According to the report ‘Working from Home Around the Globe: 2023’, hybrid working can bring these benefits to companies and employees –
- In the survey, the resignation rate was found to be low among employees working in hybrid mode. That is, if they get a chance to work in hybrid mode, they stay associated with the same company for a long time.
- Productivity in hybrid mode is higher than office working or working from home.
- Hybrid working leads to higher job satisfaction among employees. Their work-life balance is also better. This has a direct impact on their overall productivity and well-being.
- For companies, the hybrid mode is also slightly more economical than working from the office.
- Better workplace relationships were observed among employees working in hybrid mode. Toxic environment was also found to be less among them as compared to office working.
The biggest feature of hybrid mode is flexibility
In an interview, Facebook CEO and co-founder Mark Zuckerberg described hybrid mode as the future working culture. He said that due to its flexibility, hybrid working is proving to be a better choice for companies and employees.
In the hybrid mode, during the 5-day working, usually 3 days are spent in the office and 2 days working from home. But this rule is not strict. Here, the number of days of coming to the office or working from home can be increased or decreased as per the need.
For example, if there is an important meeting in the office or you are busy with a special project then the number of days you go to the office can be increased.
Similarly, the number of work from home days can be increased to carry out routine work in peace and quiet alone.
It is important to understand the difference between working hours and productivity
A few months ago, there was a lot of uproar over a statement by Infosys founder Narayan Murthy. Actually, Narayan Murthy had advocated working 70 hours a week.
He said that if you want to increase productivity, you will have to work 70 hours a week. He also said that in his youth, he too used to work 85 to 90 hours a week.
He faced opposition all over the world for this statement. This opposition was not only from the workers but also from the CEOs of many big companies who said that such a stifling work culture is harmful for productivity.
According to a report by Stanford University of America, 30-40 years ago, in the era of manual work, there used to be a direct relationship between working hours and productivity, but this is not the case today.
The work that humans do in several hours is completed by machines in a few seconds. Therefore, now the importance is of creativity and new innovative ideas. For this, there is no need to stay in the office for 12-15 hours or come seven days a week.
In this age of computer technology, there is no direct relationship between working hours and productivity. It is also possible that an employee who spends 10 hours in the office is shirking his work and another employee doing some work from home may prove to be very beneficial for the company.
