India beats US to Become Second Largest International Market for 5G Smartphones, Apple, Vivo, Samsung, Oneplus

The market for 5G smartphones has grown rapidly in the last few months. India has become the second largest market by beating the US. In the first half of this year, shipments of 5G smartphones in the country have increased by 60 percent compared to the same quarter last year. Most smartphone companies have launched new handsets in this market.

With this, the share of 5G devices in all smartphone shipments has increased to more than 50 percent. Prachir Singh, senior analyst at Counterpoint, said, “Strong shipments of Xiaomi, Vivo and other brands in the budget segment are the main reason for the rapid growth of this market.” He said that customers in emerging markets are looking at 5G smartphones as an upgrade option.

China ranks first with a share of about 32 percent in international shipments of 5G smartphones. India is followed by India with a share of about 13 percent. American devices maker Apple is leading with more than 25 percent share in international shipments of these smartphones. The company’s iPhone 14 and iPhone 15 series are getting good response from customers.

Smartphone shipments in the country grew 7.2 percent year-on-year to around 6.9 crore units in the first half of the current year. Smartphone shipments in the second quarter grew by about 3.2 percent to around 3.5 crore units. According to a report by market research firm International Data Corporation (IDC), many new smartphones have been launched in the second quarter. Most of these were in the mid-premium and premium segments. However, shipments of entry-level smartphones (priced below Rs 8,400) declined by about 36 percent in the second quarter. The market share of these segments has come down from 22 percent in the same quarter last year to around 14 percent. In this, Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi ranks first. It is followed by Poco and Realme. Shipments in the budget segment of smartphones (priced around Rs 8,400 to Rs 16,800) have increased by about 8 percent.
