The holy festival of brother-sister Raksha Bandhan will be celebrated across the country on August 19. On this day, sisters tie Rakhi to their brothers with the wish of their long life.
Brothers and sisters who are not in the same city or village send each other Rakhi and gifts through post. On the occasion of Rakhi, lakhs of Rakhis and gifts reach their destinations with the help of the postal department.
But for cyber criminals, every such occasion is a golden opportunity to invent a new way of cheating. Therefore, before Rakshabandhan, cyber criminals also become active and send messages about fake Rakhi or gift parcels to cheat people.
Such messages contain a link, on clicking which your phone can get hacked or your bank account can get emptied. Apart from this, the fraudsters can also blackmail you by hacking your phone and taking personal information from it.
Hence, there is a need to be careful and alert about fake messages coming in the name of Raksha Bandhan gift or Rakhi parcel.
so today news of need I will talk about how scams happen in the name of Rakhi or gift? Also, we will know that-
- How can you identify a scam message?
- What precautions should be taken to avoid such scams?
Expert: Rahul Mishra, Cyber Advisor (Uttar Pradesh Police)
Question: What kind of messages do cyber criminals send to cheat people on Raksha Bandhan?
answer- Cyber criminals are inventing new ways every day to cheat people. Before the festival of Rakhi, they send messages similar to India Post on people’s mobile phones. In such messages, it is claimed that there is a parcel of Rakhi in your name, but the address written on the parcel is incomplete.
It is also said that the gift parcel is not reaching you due to incomplete address. Please update your address by clicking on the link given in the message. As soon as you click on that link, the mobile phone gets hacked, due to which your personal or financial information can be leaked.
Apart from this, cyber criminals ask for payment of 20 to 50 rupees through card in the name of redelivery. People consider it to be a small amount and transfer the money through debit card or credit card. This gives your card details to scammers and they can empty your bank account.
Question: What precautions should be taken to avoid such scams?
answer- Cyber advisor Rahul Mishra says that during the festival time, there is a need to be careful and alert about such messages.
No person can become a victim of cyber scam unless he himself commits a mistake.
Cyber scammers also write a mobile number along with the message and link to trick people. The message is drafted in such a way that it really looks like an authentic message sent by India Post.
People fall for this message because they do not know that India Post never sends such messages. If the address on a parcel is wrong or incomplete, then that packet returns back to the sender.
Or you can call on the number of the person in whose name the packet is addressed and ask him to come to the government post office and receive the packet himself. But they never send you any link and ask you to update your address in it.
Understand from the graphic given below how to avoid this Rakhi parcel scam.
Always keep in mind that apart from updating the address, India Post never sends you any message or call to make payment for parcel delivery. Nor does it send you any link asking you to make UPI payment. Such messages are meant to mislead and make you a victim of fraud. Therefore, never make any payment on any such call, message or link.
Question: Where can I complain if I become a victim of a parcel scam?
answer- If a person has fallen prey to cyber criminals and shared his financial information or transferred money, he should immediately inform his bank about it.
- After this, immediately complain about this matter to the nearest police station or cyber crime helpline number 1930.
