Recently, a study was presented at the annual summit of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD). This study revealed that insulin resistance is directly related to 31 diseases. It can cause the risk of hypertension, heart disease and sleep disorders. It also increases the risk of early death in women by 11%.
Insulin resistance is a complex condition in which our body stops responding to insulin. Insulin is a hormone that our pancreas produces. It is important for regulating our blood sugar levels and many other body functions.
According to a study published in the Journal of Endocrinological Investigation, 15.5 to 46.5% of adults worldwide suffer from some form of insulin resistance. In the initial stages, it can be controlled by changing lifestyle and diet. If this condition persists for a long time, it can cause many diseases.
so today ‘health report‘ We will talk about insulin resistance. Along with that, we will know that-
- What did the new study on insulin resistance reveal?
- What is the difference between diabetes and insulin resistance?
- What effect does it have on our body?
- What are its symptoms and causes?
- What are the risk factors and prevention?
This is how insulin works in a healthy body
- Our body breaks down food into glucose, which is the main source of energy for the body.
- Glucose enters the bloodstream, which signals the pancreas to release insulin.
- Insulin helps glucose from the blood enter muscle, fat, and liver cells so they can use it for energy or store it for later use.
- When glucose enters the cells and its levels in the bloodstream drop, it signals the pancreas to stop producing insulin.
- This keeps both blood sugar level and insulin production under control.
What did the EASD study reveal?
Researcher Jing Wu of Shandong University, China and his team analyzed the data of about 4 lakh 29 thousand people from the database of UK Biobank. It was found that most cases of insulin resistance are seen in men, cigarette smokers, elderly people, obese people and people living a sedentary life style. Apart from this, what new things were discovered in the study, see in the graphic.
Diabetes occurs due to increased insulin resistance
When our cells become weak in responding to insulin, in such a situation the pancreas keeps the blood sugar level under control by producing more insulin. After this, when the cells become very resistant to insulin, the blood sugar level increases. This condition is called hyperglycemia. After some time, it causes pre-diabetes and type 2 diabetes. Apart from this, many other diseases can also occur due to it, see the graphic.
The body gives many signals before insulin resistance increases
When our body starts to become weak in responding to insulin, the pancreas’s hard work increases. Troubled by this, the body gives many signals for help. Our thirst increases more than before, there is a need to urinate frequently. What other signals does the body give, see in the graphic.
There is a difference between insulin resistance and diabetes
Insulin resistance can develop in any person’s body due to poor lifestyle and unhealthy diet. This condition can be temporary or chronic.
People who develop insulin resistance are at a higher risk of developing diabetes. This condition can also cause insulin production to stop.
Who is at higher risk of insulin resistance?
If one or both of a person’s parents have diabetes, then there is a high possibility that his body will become insulin resistant. Overweight people are also at a higher risk. Apart from this, see in the graphic which people are affected the most by it.
Insulin resistance can cause heart attack
Insulin resistance usually causes the body to increase insulin production to keep blood sugar levels under control. This condition is called hyperinsulinemia. This can result in rapid weight gain, which can make the condition of insulin resistance worse. Apart from this, many other problems can also arise:
- Triglyceride levels may increase
- Arteries can harden (Atherosclerosis)
- Blood pressure may increase (hypertension)
All these conditions together can cause a heart attack. Therefore, the best way to prevent it is to be aware of your body’s signals.
If you see signs of insulin resistance, change your diet
If there are signs of insulin resistance, we need to be careful immediately. It can be prevented by making some necessary changes in lifestyle and diet. See the graphic to know what changes need to be made in diet.
Apart from this, you also need to change your sedentary lifestyle. You should develop the habit of regular exercise. It is important to sleep on time at night and get at least 7 hours of sound sleep. You should drink 7-8 glasses of water during the day along with a healthy and balanced diet. In this way, we can control insulin resistance to a great extent.
