Cancer causing substances have been found in cakes being made in local bakeries in Karnataka. In this regard, the Karnataka government has issued a warning to all the bakeries in the state. It says that bakeries should strictly follow safety standards or strict action will be taken against them.

Recently, Karnataka Food Safety and Quality Department conducted sample testing of 235 cakes being made in local bakeries. Carcinogenic elements were found in 12 of these cakes. Carcinogens are substances that can cause cancer.

The matter of concern is that our favorite cakes – Red Velvet and Black Forest have a high risk of being carcinogens. Actually, artificial colors are used to give the cake a thick, bright red and chocolatey color. Apart from this, dangerous chemicals are added to them for flavoring, which becomes a risk to life. The question is that cakes are not being sold only in Karnataka, they are being made and sold in every small and big bakery across the country.

so today ‘medical certificate‘ I will know how worrying is the presence of carcinogens in cakes. You will also learn that-

  • How dangerous can food colors be for health?
  • How to identify food colors in food?
  • Why are young children at greater risk?

Carcinogen was found in cotton candy before cake

The Karnataka government had taken a strict stance on the use of artificial colors a few months ago. Food Safety Commissioner Srinivas K. In March, India had banned the use of artificial colors in the chutney of Gobi Manchurian, Cotton Candy, Kebab and Panipuri. During that time also the Food Safety Department had found carcinogen in sample testing.

How dangerous can carcinogen found in cake be?

Carcinogen simply means that it can cause cancer. If there is carcinogen in cake or any food item and we are eating it then it is like saying ‘Come bull kill me’ to a serious disease like cancer.

Dr. Anu Aggarwal, who was a dietitian in the cancer department at AIIMS, Rishikesh, says that just as carcinogen is found in cake, similarly it is found in tobacco. The difference between these two is that they contain different amounts of carcinogens.

Understand it in this way that if tobacco is causing cancer to develop in 5 years, then if this cake is eaten frequently, cancer may develop in 10 years. However, not all cakes contain carcinogens. This dangerous element has been found in the cake due to artificial colours.

There are many risks due to artificial colors

Currently, artificial colors are in the news due to the presence of carcinogens. Whereas using artificial food colors to make food look appealing is dangerous in every case. It is also called food dye.

Due to this, conditions like severe allergies, asthma and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder are being created. Let us see in the graphic what harm artificial colors cause to health.

Playing with health to make food look appealing

Earlier humans were dependent on nature for their food. They worked hard all day and collected their food from forests, fields and hunting. All his hard work from morning till evening was just for food. Then as time passed, man’s desire for luxuries increased, so food became just a part of life.

People became dependent on the market for their food. This gave the businessman an opportunity to enter the food industry. They have turned food into a desire, a fashion and a standard, because for them it is more of a product than a source of energy, which has to be sold as much as possible to earn money.

For earning and profit he used various flavors and artificial colors. All this is made from dangerous chemicals. Due to this our body is suffering serious harm.

Artificial colors are causing serious harm to children

When small children have problems like asthma, cancer or kidney disease, people question that if children do not consume any drug, then why are they becoming victims of these serious diseases.

The answer to all such questions is that common people are unaware that giving packaged good flavored powders and drinks is causing harm to children instead of any benefit. People are also bringing packaged food items for their children after seeing advertisements on TV, newspapers and seeing neighbors and relatives.

All these contain a lot of artificial flavour, artificial color and artificial sugar.

Dr. Anu Aggarwal says that most of the things liked by children like ice cream, candy and cake are made of artificial colors and flavors. Since the internal organs of small children are very delicate, these dangerous chemicals enter the children’s body and pose a greater risk.

Do not give these things to small children even for love and affection

Dr. Anu Aggarwal says that how children’s taste buds develop is completely in the hands of their parents. If children’s taste buds are developed from the beginning for fruits, vegetables, pulses and grains, then they will not insist on packaged foods.

As long as parents are in charge of their children’s food, they should try to have their food cooked at home. If children want sweet taste then try to get it from a natural source. It can be any fruit or sugarcane.

The advantage of this will be that by the time children are able to choose their own food, their taste buds will have developed for food obtained from trees and plants. Their attention will be less towards packaged foods and they will not like its taste either.

The second big advantage is that children will stay away from any kind of chemical in their early critical age. It is good for their health and future.

How to know if artificial colors are present in food?

According to the guidelines of the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India, information about the use of artificial colors has to be given in the wrappers of packaged foods. If food dye is used in it, then ‘contains permitted synthetic food colours’ has to be written on the wrapper. When artificial colors are used locally, such guidelines are not followed in their packing. Therefore it is difficult to identify. The better way is to depend on natural sources for most of the food items.
