Imagine that a person is bitten by an insect while walking in a park or a green area and develops a red rash. There was no pain or itching in the rash so he did not feel the need for treatment. Meanwhile, the rashes increased further in the body. The symptoms of cough and cold persist. After several days, it is noticed that he is having severe pain in his knees. He is forgetting small things, even a little stress on the mind is causing irritation. The heart and liver are becoming weak. It is becoming difficult for doctors to understand what is the reason behind this?
The way all this has happened in a series, the reason for all this can be Lyme disease. This disease is caused by the bite of a tick (an insect found on the body of animals and in forests). It is also called deer tick. These days this tick has become a matter of concern in many countries like America.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 30,000 cases of Lyme disease are reported in the US every year. It is feared that this figure could be even higher as many cases remain undiagnosed. Many cases of Lyme disease have been reported in India as well. However, most of its cases have been reported in the foothills of the Himalayas.
In the rainy months, when the grass and greenery increases, these ticks also start growing and spreading rapidly. This is the reason why experts are expressing concern about this in India too.
Today ‘health report‘ I will talk about Lyme disease. Along with this, we will know that-
- What are its symptoms?
- What is the treatment for Lyme disease?
- What are the measures to prevent this?
What is Lyme disease
Lyme disease is spreading all over the world due to climate change. This disease is caused by a bacteria called Borrelia burgdorferi. It is spread by the bite of an infected black-legged tick or deer tick. This disease is not caused by ticks found on the body of wood and dogs.

How many stages does Lyme disease have?
Lyme disease is usually divided into three stages. They are classified based on symptoms, severity of infection, and progression.
1. First stage (Early localised): The first stage is between 1 to 28 days after the tick bite. In this stage the bacteria is present only in the infected area. It does not spread anywhere else.
2. Second Stage (Early Disseminated): The second stage of Lyme disease develops about 3 weeks after the tick bite and can last up to 12 weeks. In this stage, the bacteria has spread to the organs around the infected area.
3. Third stage (Late disseminated): This is the third and final stage of Lyme disease. It can take several months or years to develop. In this, the bacteria has spread almost all over the body and due to this, the liver, heart, face and brain are all affected.
How this disease affects our body
A red rash initially appears due to the bite of a deer tick. This is caused by a bacterial infection. Then this bacteria keeps spreading inside our body. Slowly it takes hold of our liver and nervous system. Many problems start arising due to this. If it is not treated on time, it can cause many problems. The biggest problem is that its symptoms are so common and are so similar to other diseases that it is difficult to diagnose it.
Despite this, it can be identified by some symptoms and it can also be estimated which stage of Lyme disease it is.
What are the symptoms of Lyme disease
In Lyme disease, first of all a red mark appears on our body. It is usually like a round shaped rash.
After this, the symptoms seem like common cold and fever. The infected person starts having the same kind of problems as someone with flu, cold, cough, headache. If this disease persists for a long time, then problems like joint pain and memory loss also start. See in the graphic how its symptoms change stage by stage.

Sometimes the symptoms of Lyme disease appear up to 3 months after the tick bite. While sometimes it can take up to 12 months. If more time has passed since Lyme disease, then in stage 2 and 3 the infection spreads to many organs i.e. almost the entire body.

What is the treatment for Lyme disease
Antibiotics are usually given to the affected person for effective treatment of Lyme disease. How long it will take to recover depends on the stage of infection and the health of the infected person.
The sooner the treatment starts, the quicker and easier the recovery is. This also reduces the physical damage to the patient. Understand from the graphic what to do in case of a deer tick bite.

How can we avoid ticks
Avoiding ticks is the best way to avoid Lyme disease as well. For this, we can follow some important tips.
- Wear long pants and full-sleeved shirts when going out of the house.
- Protect your clothing with permethrin, which keeps ticks away.
- Permethrin is a type of antibacterial spray and lotion. It is available for both skin and clothing.
- Permethrin spray should not be used on worn clothing and should never be used on undergarments.
- You can use insect repellents such as DEET on the grass and plants around the house.
- If the pets in your house have come from tall grass and wooded areas, bathe them thoroughly and carefully.
