This is the story of a famous and famous actor-director of Bollywood who made his brother a superstar. Many great films were produced in the 70-80s. We are talking about Vijay Anand, brother of Bollywood’s first superstar Devanand, who has given superhit films like ‘Guide’, ‘Jewel Thief’, ‘Johnny Mera Naam’, ‘Kora Kagaz’.
Vijay Anand was born on 22 January 1934 in Gurdaspur, Punjab. His father was a lawyer. When he was six years old, his mother died. He tried his hand in all types of films like romantic, comedy, family drama and thriller and proved his ability. Director-producer Chetan Anand and actor-director Dev Anand were his elder brothers. Vijay Anand started working with both the brothers in the production house ‘Navketan Films’ and soon made his own identity. Seeing Vijay Anand’s vision and approach towards films, many big directors and modern film makers of Bollywood used to call him ‘Encyclopedia of Film Making’. He is called the magician of cinema. Vijay Anand wrote his first script at the age of 16. At the age of 21, he directed his first film. He was also famous by the name of Goldie.
After giving three superhit films one after the other like Guide, Teesri Manzil, Jewel Thief, Vijay Anand gave his first flop in 1968. The name of the film was ‘Kahin Aur Chal’. However, in 1970, he once again made a strong comeback at the box office with ‘Johnny Mera Naam’. In 1971, ‘Tere Mere Sapne’ did not get that much success. This film proved to be the turning point in his life. Blackmail (1973), Chupa Rustom (1973), Bullet (1976) also did not do well at the box office.
Meanwhile, in 1978, during the shooting of the film Ram Balram, Vijay Anand kept aside all the rules and customs of the Indian society and married his elder sister’s daughter i.e. his niece Sushma Kohli for the second time. There was a lot of uproar in his family regarding this marriage. However, now both are no more in this world. Both of them had a son, Vaibhav, who is associated with the film industry.
Sushma Kohli gave an interview in 2018. In this special conversation, she told that husband Vijay Anand was very shy in real life. Sushma said, ‘He was a person of very calm nature. He could never get angry, on the contrary, I used to get angry sometimes. We got married in 1978 during the shooting of ‘Ram-Balram’. She used to tease him deliberately. Sometimes he would explain to me and sometimes I would handle the entire matter.
