The Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) recently tweeted about violations of rules at the Pune plant of German luxury car manufacturer Mercedes Benz. However, the MPCB deleted this tweet after some time.

In this tweet, MPCB had mentioned that the board’s chairman Siddesh Kadam had visited the Mercedes-Benz Pune plant with a group of people. Three pictures of Kadam inspecting the plant were also shared in this tweet.

MPCB tweets- Mercedes Benz is not following pollution control guidelines
In a tweet along with Kadam’s photos, MPCB wrote, ‘Important information: Mercedes-Benz’s assembly plant was found to be non-compliant.

During the inspection conducted by MPCB Chairman Siddesh Kadam on August 23, 2024, it was found that the Mercedes-Benz Assembly Plant was not following the pollution control guidelines of the MPCB.’

Have not received any notice from MPCB regarding violation: Mercedes-Benz
Meanwhile, Mercedes-Benz officials said they had not received any written notice or formal request from the MPCB chairman regarding the violation.

The company said- we follow global standards in production quality
The company said in a statement, ‘Mercedes Benz is in its 30th year of operations in India. At the same time, the company’s manufacturing facility in Chakan, Pune is in its 15th year of operation, which is a benchmark in automotive manufacturing in India.

The company gives high priority to adhering to global standards in production quality, maintaining high environmental & sustainability practices, complying with mandatory regulations and requirements.

We are ready to cooperate with the authorities and submit all the required procedures and documents and take any corrective action if required.’

Local MP raised questions on deletion of MPCB’s tweets
Chakan, located in Khed taluka of Pune district, is a hub of automotive giants. Local MP Dr. Amol Kolhe raised questions about the MPCB chairman’s plant visit and deletion of the tweet.

The MP said, ‘This raises many questions whether this visit was serious or not. The issue of pollution in the Indrayani river in Chakan is still not resolved. We would like to know the purpose behind this visit of the MPCB and the issues identified by the chairman of the board.’
