Expert- Dr. Anshu Sharma, Pediatrician (Mathura)
Question: A child can die if he is locked inside the car for a long time. Why does this happen
answer- If you stay in a closed car for a long time, the airflow stops, due to which the oxygen level inside the car starts decreasing. Gradually the level of carbon dioxide in the car starts increasing and the level of oxygen starts decreasing. After a point, breathing becomes impossible and the person inside starts suffocating. Besides, due to heat the level of carbon monoxide gas inside the car also increases. This also causes suffocation inside.
Apart from this, if the car is parked in the sun and its AC is off, then within a short time the temperature inside can become almost double that of the outside. In such a situation, suffocation can also occur due to overheating.
Overall, it is not possible to breathe for long inside a closed vehicle. If someone is stuck in such a situation for a long time, he may die due to inability to breathe.

Always keep a small child in the back seat
According to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), children under the age of 13 should always ride in the back seat. In case of an accident, the rear seat is 70% safer than the front seat.
Apart from this, the child should never be made to sit on a seat with a front air bag. Front air bags are designed for an adult person. Opening it suddenly can cause serious injury to the child or suffocation.

This sign is put up to alert other drivers, so that they can be more careful while passing around the car. Additionally, if an accident occurs, this sticker tells emergency services that there is an infant or small child in the car, so that they can provide necessary help immediately.

Eating snacks in a moving car can get stuck in the child’s throat, causing breathing problems. Therefore, drinks and snacks etc. should be given to children only after stopping the car. Apart from this, breastfeeding babies should also be avoided in a moving car.
