What is emotional imbalance?
Emotional imbalance means not being able to control your emotions. Lack of control over emotional impulses in a particular situation.
Sometimes we get very angry, and sometimes we suddenly become very sad. We also overreact on small things, which is harmful for our mental and physical health.
There are two types of overreactions –
Reactive overreaction – Reactive overreaction is a condition when you overreact to an event.
Compulsive overreaction – In the case of compulsive overreaction, there is no control over one’s reaction. Even without wanting to, you start reacting or behaving in a certain way.
Signs of emotional imbalance
Sometimes it happens that you feel too much love or anger, this is normal. This can happen to anyone. But how to know that someone is losing his emotional balance? He is going into a state of emotional imbalance.
To understand this, we talked to Dr. Satyakant Trivedi, a well-known psychiatrist from Bhopal. See some signs of emotional imbalance in the graphic below. If you see such signs within yourself or in someone around you, then it is possible that that person is suffering from emotional imbalance.

How to protect yourself from emotional imbalance?
Here we will discuss some important options to protect yourself from emotional imbalance. In this we will talk about how to understand your triggers, evaluate the situation and other methods.
First consider some of the suggestions given by the psychiatrist in the graphic below –
Identify your triggers
If we are repeatedly overreacting or losing our temper even over small things, then it is a danger sign. It means that everything is not well with us. In such a situation, we should pay attention to those things which make us emotionally unstable. We should pay attention to these things in advance and think of other options instead of overreacting in such a situation.
Calmly evaluate the situation
Usually overreaction is related to some deeper problem. Sometimes our overreaction may be linked to a past trauma. In such a situation, we should try to understand, accept and heal from this type of trauma.
Instead of reacting, respond
When you feel like overreacting, stop and think about what emotions are associated with the situation or event. Ask yourself, am I overreacting to something that happened in the past? Can I respond thoughtfully instead of overreacting? It is not in your hands to change the past, but it is in your hands to control your behavior in the present.
- Take a deep breath in case of overreaction.
- Repeat some sentence formations to yourself, like “I can deal with this better.”
- Before overreacting, imagine a better answer.
Practice Self-Compassion
Being compassionate toward ourselves can help us control overreactions. When emotions dominate us, many times we start cursing ourselves. If we learn from overreaction and react more intelligently next time, it helps in maintaining mental peace and balance. With this we can face situations in a more positive way.
