The most important part in film making is post-production. In this stage, work is done on things like editing, dubbing, sound mixing and VFX of the film. The king of this post production is called film editor. After the actor and director, it is the editor who gives the right direction to the film.
In this episode of Reel to Real, we spoke to film editor Suvir Nath and director Karan Guliani to understand the post-production process.
He told that it takes 4 to 6 months to edit a film. However, it took 2 years to edit the film OMG 2. At the same time, many challenges have to be faced during post production. Post-production is often delayed due to reshoots and censor boards, due to which the budget of the film increases significantly.
The editor plays the most major role in the post production of the film. Before the editing of the film starts, there is a meeting between the editor and the director. In this meeting the director explains his vision. After understanding the director’s vision, the editor starts editing.
It is the job of the film editor to give the right direction to the story. Apart from the actor, director and producer, the film editor also plays a major role in giving the right direction to the film. Film editor Suvir Nath says about this – I believe that a film takes its true form only on the editing table.
Understand, a writer writes the story of a film with his vision. Then the director directs it with his vision, but when the footage comes to the editor, sometimes its quality is better in every angle, and sometimes the quality is very bad. In such a situation, difficulties increase for the film editor. Then it becomes our responsibility to make the best out of the same footage.
It is the editor who decides which shot will be taken where, when and how in the film. We can say that an editor can improve or spoil the hard work of an actor-director.
Changes were made in the film OMG 2 as per the instructions of the Censor Board in 4-5 days. Suvir Nath has edited the film OMG 2. Regarding the experience of working in this project, he said – Working in this project was very challenging. Actually, the story of the film itself was different. In this, sex education was combined with religion. Generally Indians are conscious in the name of religion. Ultimately there was some controversy.
Like the writer, I had the challenge that the film should appear sensitive but not vulgar. However, the biggest challenge came when instructions for many changes were given by the Censor Board. It was very difficult for me to maintain the emotion and dignity of the film with these changes.
There was a gap of only 10 days between the Censor Board’s instructions and the release. But in reality I had only 4-5 days. Well somehow this work was completed.

Post-production work gets delayed due to reshoots Suvir Nath told that it happens many times that after the entire shooting is over, some part of the film has to be shot again. This has to be done due to reasons like sound quality or footage quality.
Like some scenes of the first season of the web series The Family Man were reshot. During editing, the need for improvement in these scenes was felt. In such a situation, these scenes were reshot so that the story progresses properly and the development of the characters appears correct.
These reshoots were done to improve the quality, but it affected the shooting and post-production schedules.
Producers take action against footage theft Karan Guliani spoke on Nayanthara and Dhanush’s controversy. Giving an example of this controversy, he explained – The producer has the rights to every shot, music and tune used in the film. Even the rights of the footage that remains after editing of the film are with the producer.
If someone uses that footage without the producer’s permission, the producer can accuse them of piracy. However, the way the dispute is taking place between Nayanthara and Dhanush over the 3-second visual, it should not have happened.
Be it Hindi or Tamil, dubbing of every film is different. Dubbing also plays an important role in the post-production of the film. Usually we see that the Hollywood or South movies are dubbed in Hindi language for the Hindi audience, but do you know that the Hindi language movies we watch are also dubbed. Meaning, no matter what language the film is in, there will definitely be dubbing for it after editing.
Now the question is why Hindi films are dubbed in Hindi or Tamil films in Tamil. In fact, when a film is shot, apart from the actors’ voices, the surrounding sounds are also recorded in the camera and mic. Which is meaningless during the final output and also spoils the scene.
For this reason, the original sound is muted after the entire shooting is done for sound clarity. Then the actors dub their voices according to the scene. After this the surrounding sound is created from Foley Sound.
Tumbbad was made in 6 years due to delay in post production A lot of time was spent on VFX and sound design in the post production of the film Tumbbad. Due to this the release of the film was delayed. The shooting of the film started in 2012. Prosthetic makeup was used at this time, but it was not successful. After this, another method was also used in 2015, but it also failed.
Ultimately, VFX was used to depict the film’s monster (Hastar), which led to further delays. This process took a lot of time to create the jungle and monster scenes. However, when the film was released in 2018, the audience liked it very much.
