Question: What kind of precautions should be taken while driving a car during rainy season?
answer- Road accidents increase a lot during the rainy season because potholes are not visible due to water accumulation on the roads. Apart from this, visibility often reduces while driving due to raindrops.
Due to this, sometimes even the nearby vehicles are not visible properly. In such a situation, the chances of collision with other vehicles on the road increases. Therefore, while driving in the rainy season, use windshield wiper blades and headlights for visibility.
Recently, Mumbai Police has given some tips regarding driving during rainy season. You can see them in the graphic below.
Question: What things should be kept in mind while driving a two-wheeler during the rainy season?
answer- Driving a two-wheeler during rainy season is the most risky because the road is slippery due to oil, mud and water. Due to the wetness of the road, the frictional force between the wheels and the road decreases. Due to this, two-wheeler drivers become victims of accidents.
Apart from this, many times the potholes on the roads get filled with water, which is not visible due to rain water. Therefore, two-wheeler drivers should take some precautions during the rainy season.
Understand from the graphic given below what precautions should be taken while driving a bike or scooter during the rainy season.
Let us understand some of the points given in the above graphic in detail.
Check the tyres of your bike or scooter
Before the monsoon season begins, make sure to check the tyres of your vehicle. Check whether the width and depth of the tyre is correct or not. The tyres of a two-wheeler are designed to maintain contact and grip with the road. But as the tyre wears out, it becomes completely flat, which can cause slippage during the rainy season. In such a situation, driving on a wet road can be dangerous. If you go out for office or some work every day during the rainy season, then it is best to change the tyres of the bike.
Avoid overspeeding during monsoon
Due to rain, the grip between the road and the tyres of the bike or scooter decreases. When you drive at a speed of more than 60 km/h in the rainy season, there is a risk of slipping while turning or due to sudden braking. However, if you drive the bike or scooter carefully within the speed of 30-50 km/h, then the risk of falling even after applying brakes is less.
Avoid going out immediately after rain
Roads are most slippery 20-30 minutes after rain. When it rains, oil and road dirt accumulate and form a slippery layer on the road. Riding a bike in such a situation can be risky. Therefore, it is advisable to wait for 30-40 minutes after monsoon rain.
Always wear a helmet that covers the entire head and face
Always wear a full face helmet while going out on a bike or scooter during the rainy season. This will prevent rainwater from reaching your eyes. Along with this, your head will be safe in case of any kind of accident. Transparent glasses should be worn instead of dark glasses during the rainy season.
Keep the bike’s headlights on in the rain
During heavy rains, the problem of visibility on the road is the most. Especially when you are riding a bike or scooter. Therefore, to stay safe during the rainy season, you should keep the headlights of your vehicle on. Especially on a road where there is no divider and vehicles are coming from both directions. Apart from this, keep cleaning the rear lights and indicator lights from time to time during the rainy season because their light can be reduced due to mud or water.
Get servicing done on time
Get your bike serviced on time so that it does not break down mid-way during the rainy season. Make sure that the tyres are properly inflated and all the lights and brakes are working properly.
Do not drive without insurance
According to the Motor Vehicles Act, 2019, driving without an insurance policy is illegal. Therefore, definitely check the insurance policy of your bike. Cases of bike accidents increase during monsoon. Therefore, definitely take insurance cover.
put a cover on the petrol tank
To protect the bike from rain, you can use a waterproof bike cover. These covers prevent water from entering the fuel tank. This can prevent the bike from starting and the cost of cleaning the fuel tank.
Question: What kind of precautions should be taken while walking on the road during the rainy season?
answer- During rains, not only drivers but also pedestrians should take special precautions.
In such weather, one should wear light and shiny clothes because visibility reduces during heavy rains. In such a situation, black, brown, grey or dusky coloured clothes will not be easily visible from a distance. The colour of the clothes should be such that it can be seen shining clearly from a distance. Wear a raincoat of sharp and shiny colour. If you are going out with an umbrella, then instead of a black umbrella, use an umbrella of such a colour that reflects the light of vehicles from a distance.
