New Delhi: Late composer RD Burman had created many iconic songs in collaboration with senior lyricist like Gulzar, but the way of working with him was not easy. When he was facing difficulty in composing the music of the song ‘Mera Kuch Saman’ from the film ‘Ijaazat’, Asha Bhosle helped him. In an old video, RD Burman had told how much effort it took to create a song with Gulzar.
RD Burman had said, ‘It is very difficult to work with one man, his name is Gulzar. We were working on ‘Aandhi’. I could not understand the language or the meter of the songs he had written in the film. His meter is completely different from the pattern we have created in cinema.’ In the video, RD Burman is seen telling Gulzar, ‘We cannot work like this. Gulzar then asked him to try something and he assured the composer to do it differently.’
Memorable songs were made for the film ‘Aandhi’
The composer further said, ‘Then one day we both sat together and somehow composed the song. While working on the song, we finally prepared the ‘mukhda’ of the song. Then I told him ‘Now you have to write the ‘antara’ according to the ‘mukhda’ and its meter. But he got stuck there, went home and again told me that this is not possible. But our persistence paved the way for good songs, see how many good songs are there in ‘Aandhi’.
Gulzar used to quarrel with RD Burman often
Gulzar and RD Burman often used to fight over the lyrics of the songs, another example of this is the song ‘Mera Kuch Saman’ sung by Asha Bhosle in the film ‘Ijaazat’ directed by Gulzar. RD Burman started having difficulty in composing the tune for the song written by Gulzar, then Asha Bhosle sang a tune which he liked. That tune was made a part of the song. This song also received two National Awards. Gulzar was awarded for the best lyricist and Asha Bhosle for the best female singer.
