Makeup artist Namrata Soni has mentioned the incident when the industry’s Makeup Artists Association had banned female makeup artists. Namrata said that artists like Shahrukh Khan and Salman Khan had helped her in this bad time.
Talking to news agency ANI, Namrata said, ‘I remember working in Film City. At that time, parents would get threatening calls that if your daughter does not stop doing makeup, we will chop off her hands. All this was happening in India where secularism songs are sung with a woman President.’
People used to come to the set to threaten
Namrata also shared her scary experience of working with the association. She said that when she was being threatened on the set, the makers would ask her to hide in the vanity van. However, later when many female artists took a stand for themselves, many A-list actors also came forward in their defense and supported them.
Namrata said, ‘I am very lucky that I got a chance to work with people like Farah Khan, Karan Johar, Sonam Kapoor, Sameera Reddy, Katrina Kaif. These people supported me at every step.’
Salman and Shahrukh came forward in support of Namrata
Namrata further said, ‘Celebrities used to say that we want to work with Namrata. When the union comes on the set, we are ready to support Namrata and are also ready to fight together.
I was very lucky that I had people like Shahrukh and Salman who stood by me. I am glad that I fought.
Until 2014, there were no female makeup artists in any film industry of the country. No female makeup artist was registered in the Makeup Artists Association. Men used to do the makeup of both the hero and the heroine, whether the makeup was just for the face or the full body. To make a place in this men’s association, female makeup artists had to fight a long battle for four years.
In 2014, the Supreme Court had ruled that female makeup artists would also work in the film industry.
