Navratri is one of the most celebrated festivals in India. It is not just about fasting, garba and devotion. This festival is also associated with spiritual contemplation, purity and bringing about transformation in oneself. Shardiya Navratri is starting from October 3, 2024 and will be celebrated for 9 days. It will conclude on October 11, Mahanavami Tithi. During this period, nine different forms of Goddess Durga are worshiped for nine days.

In today’s life, due to the increasing pace of technology and modernity, we have forgotten the good qualities. One reason for this could also be the busyness and stress of life. We neither have patience and tolerance for things nor the feeling of surrender and sacrifice.

Mata Shailputri means patience and tolerance
The first form of Maa Durga is Shailputri, who is worshiped on the first day of Navratri. It is a symbol of patience and tolerance. It teaches us many qualities, such as-
- The form of Maa Shailputri reflects gentleness, compassion, affection and patience.
- Mother Shailputri’s vehicle is a bull. It teaches us how we can adopt good values in life.
- Mother’s white clothes give us the message of purity, peace and cleanliness.
- Mother Shailputri has a lotus in her left hand, which inspires us to do great deeds.
- The trident in his right hand signifies the end of evil.
Mata Brahmacharini means penance and restraint
Brahmacharini is another form of Maa Durga, who shows penance and restraint. Mother Brahmacharini is the goddess of knowledge, penance and renunciation. This form of Mother teaches us not just one but many qualities. Such as-
- There is no success in life without hard work and penance, so keep working hard.
- You need to give up some things to reach your dreams and goals, like laziness, procrastination, wasting time unnecessarily, etc.
- Maa Durga served and sacrificed for her family and society. We should also develop a spirit of service and sacrifice for the people around us.
Mata Chandraghanta means devotion and service.
This is the third form of Maa Durga, which is called ‘Chandraghanta’. This form is peaceful and beneficial. Mother Chandraghanta has an hourglass shaped half moon on her forehead. That is why she is called ‘Chandraghanta Devi’. We can learn many qualities from these, such as-
- Mother Durga kept the spirit of service to the society. It inspires us to devotion and service to our elders.
- ‘Chandraghanta’ is made up of two words, in which ‘Chandra’ means moon, which is a symbol of coolness and peace.
- Whereas ‘Ghanta’ represents the bell, which symbolizes the spirit of devotion and service.
Mata Kushmanda means strength and courage
Mother Kushmanda is worshiped on the fourth day of Navratri. This form of his teaches us strength and courage. Along with this, there are many other qualities which we can learn, such as-
- Mata Kushmanda is Adi-Shakti and helps her devotees to channelize their energies in the right direction.
- She teaches us how we can maintain balance in our lives.
- When a bad situation comes, how can we come out of it by showing strength and courage.
Skandamata means love, kindness and compassion
Skandamata is said to be the mother of Lord Kartikeya. It is clear from her name that Skandamata is the mother of ‘Skanda’ and loves her son very much. We can learn from Mother Skandamata that-
- How to love loved ones unconditionally. How can we have kindness and compassion towards others?
- Just as a mother supports and teaches her child, Skandamata takes care of her devotees by holding their hands. This teaches us the feeling of compassion.
Mata Katyayani means religion and justice
Mother Katyayani is worshiped on the sixth day of Navratri. She is also known as ‘Warrior Goddess’. Mother Katyayani is a symbol of courage and strength.
- From these we can learn how to face our fears without getting scared or worried.
- Mother Katyayani also teaches us to always stand for what is right and face challenges like a warrior.
- We can also learn from them how to achieve success against the negativity of life.
Mata Kalratri means sacrifice of negative things.
On the seventh day, the fierce form of Maa Durga ‘Maa Kalratri’ is worshipped. This form symbolizes the destruction of evil forces and freedom from their clutches. It is said that-
- Maa Kalratri teaches people two things – firstly that people should show courage and fierceness to face challenges.
- Secondly, just as there is a shining sun after every dark night, similarly after every difficult phase of life comes good times. We need to be patient.
Mata Mahagauri means purity and sanctity in life.
Mata Mahagauri is considered a symbol of purity and innocence. We can learn many qualities from Mahagauri, such as-
- How do we keep our mind pure with positive thinking and good thoughts?
- Also how should we introspect?
- This form inspires us to maintain purity and sanctity in life, so that we stay away from evil.
Mata Siddhidatri means surrender
Siddhidatri is considered to be the ninth power of Mother Durga. Their form teaches us many qualities, such as-
- Maa Siddhidatri imparts divine knowledge and wisdom and teaches her devotees to follow the right path.
- This form of mother teaches us to always seek the truth.
- We can learn that true knowledge is not outside but within us, which we need to seek and attain.
