M.G. Ramachandran (MGR) was also a superstar of Tamil films and also the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. Today is MGR’s 108th birth anniversary. Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to MGR on Friday. Also appreciated the contribution made by him in the development of Tamil Nadu.
Prime Minister Modi shared a video on his social media handle X. He wrote, ‘I pay tribute to Shri MGR on his birth anniversary. We are deeply inspired by his efforts to empower the poor and build a better society.
Tamil Nadu BJP president K. Annamalai also paid tribute to former Chief Minister MGR. He said, ‘Today is the birth anniversary of former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu and Bharat Ratna awardee MGR. He started many schemes for the poor and backward sections of the society, such as health services, training programmes, employment schemes, education, women empowerment and nutritious food for school children. He organized the World Tamil Conference and made Tamils feel proud. We pay tribute to Dr. MGR, who was a great nationalist and worked for the upliftment of the backward people.
Know who was MGR?
MG Ramachandran was a well-known superstar of the Tamil industry. His fan following shocked the world. At the age of 19, MGR entered films by playing the role of a police inspector in the 1936 film Sati Lilavati. He got his first lead role in the 1947 film Rajkumari. By 1950, MGR had achieved star status with several hit films such as Manthiri Kumari. The 1954 film Malaikkallan was such a big hit that after that he started being worshiped like a god.
Initially MGR used to play women’s roles in plays.
MGR became a part of Congress Party in 1953
MGR became a part of the Congress Party in 1953. The number of MGR’s fans was so much that every political party wanted to include him in their party. Film writer turned politician C.N. Annadurai convinced MGR to join his party, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK). MGR became MLA for the first time in 1962.
