Sometimes, while roaming in a vegetable market, try a small experiment. Go to different vegetable and fruit shops and ask their prices and roughly estimate the number of customers present there.
You will find that shops where fruits and vegetables are arranged neatly have more customers despite the higher prices. On the other hand, fruits and vegetables kept in a heap are considered to be of the ‘bad’ and cheap category.
Do you know why this happens? The simple answer is presentation skills. According to a report by the University of Sheffield in Britain, the demand for a person, idea or product largely depends on its presentation.
Anyway, there is an old saying that ‘whatever is visible, sells.’ Whether you go to the market to buy vegetables, make an assignment, present a report in your office or express your feelings to someone, in all these situations, an attractive presentation is considered very important.
Today we will learn some tips to improve presentation skills in workplace relationships. With the help of which you can present yourself, your ideas and your product in a better way to the world.
Knowledge, skills and experience are of no use without presentation
Imagine a person who has a lot of experience in his work. He also has good knowledge of the work. But his presentation skills are not good.
In such a situation, he will not be able to present his idea properly to the manager in the office meeting. Whereas his junior who has less experience will be able to explain a simple idea to the manager in a strong way on the basis of his presentation skills and there will be full possibility that people in the office will also like his idea. Here the whole game is of presentation.
Understand this with another example. You must know many bright students around you who lag behind in exams due to poor handwriting. Whereas some average students get good marks with the help of good handwriting and presentation skills.
Here too, it is all about presentation skills, due to lack of which knowledge, experience and other skills become useless.
Identifying the target audience and choosing the right medium is important
If you want to improve your presentation skills, then first of all, decide your goal. For example, you have to express your love to a friend or present a project report to your boss or say something in front of people at a party. Then plan ahead accordingly.
The second most important thing in improving presentation skills is choosing the right medium. For example, a love letter written through PPT and a project report made on a blank paper, both will be considered bad presentations. A presentation made with the help of the appropriate medium is considered better.
The medium is also a message, people can guess the content by looking at the letter
The famous saying of renowned Canadian communication expert Marshall McLuhan is – ‘Medium is the message’ i.e. the medium is the message.
According to Marshall McLuhan, if we write a letter to someone, then its envelope is also a message in itself. Similarly, internet, PPT, chat and video conferencing medium are also messages.
If we write a letter to someone, he will read the medium i.e. the envelope before reading the words. Understanding this, choose the appropriate medium for the person in front of whom you want to present yourself.
Presentation is not just delivery of message, emotional bonding is important
In any kind of presentation, keep in mind that it is not just the delivery of a message. If only the message is delivered then it will not even be called a presentation.
Presentation means presenting even simple information in an artistic and interesting way. For this, it is important to connect emotionally with your audience.
In any situation of the presentation, the audience should not feel that something else is being discussed. The people for whom the presentation has been prepared should feel this at every step. The more the audience is able to connect with the message, the better the presentation will be considered.
Coordination of tongue and body is important, they should complement each other
Suppose, a person is presenting a working report in his office. While talking about growth, if he moves his hand from top to bottom, then in this situation, the tongue and body language are telling different stories. This habit can spoil the presentation.
According to a report by the University of Sheffield, it is important to have a proper coordination between the words spoken and the body language during a presentation. For example, when talking about growth, that growth should be reflected on the face as well. Similarly, if you are praising someone, it is also important to look into the eyes and show emotions through the face.
Try to say more in fewer words, choose new ideas
Something spoken in half an hour is not necessarily more effective than something spoken in 15 minutes. The shorter and ‘to the point’ the presentation is, the more likely it is to be effective. A longer speech or slides can disconnect the audience.
