Mumbai There is a big building next to the Flora Fountain – Tata House. A 70 year old man gets down from a gray colored Indica car in the street next to that building. He is wearing a light blue cotton shirt and a loose gray colored pant. There are leather sandals on his feet. After getting down from the car, he moves straight towards the building and stands next to the lift which is visible as soon as he enters the building. There is a line of people waiting for their turn to go up in front. He is standing behind.
The person who came in simple clothes, driving a very simple car himself and standing in the queue, is none other than Ratan Tata himself. Owner of this Tata House. Owner of Tata Group of Industries, one of the oldest and most prosperous companies in the country.
The day before yesterday on Wednesday, at around 11 pm, Ratan Naval Tata breathed his last. 86-year-old Ratan Tata was admitted in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai.
Whoever has come into this world has to go one day. But the question is, what legacy does one leave behind? In the form of which ideas, values, ideals, it always remains alive in the memories of the people and in the lives of the coming generations.
Many people working in Tata House used to come to office much more prepared than him, shining in suits and boots. But Ratan Tata used to come everyday in the same simple clothes in such a way that even if someone did not recognize his face, he could have been considered an ordinary employee of Tata House.
Every day he would stand in front of the lift and wait for his turn. If any peon or even a clerk was standing in front of him and asked Ratan ji to go first, he would have refused and would have stood silently in the queue. Similar stories are told in the Tata house about his uncle JRD Tata. Who knows, this humility, this simplicity might have come from there in him.
So, today in this column we remember Ratan Tata with a heavy heart, full eyes and a lot of love and respect.
How does one become Ratan Tata?
In life we always talk about success, prosperity, achieving position, power and money. Everyone wants to get all this. But it is rarely talked about that what was that unique thing about the people who achieved all this, which took them to that high level of success.
One does not become a leader just because he inherited his father’s established company. One can get company, but one cannot get success, love and respect of the people around one, if one does not have capability, depth in his personality and greatness in his character.
What Ratan Tata earned in his life was not just money and success. To be honest, these things were the most trivial for him. What he earned is respect and immense love for him in the hearts of those who know him.
Prosperity needs no show off
Except for some special occasions, Ratan Tata always wore very modest clothes and slippers. He had a simple phone, drove an Indica car and drove it himself. There was no pretense in his daily life, lifestyle and attire. These were not just external things. It was a matter of deep values that external glitter did not matter to him. The only difference that mattered was how beautiful and shiny his work was.
Emotions are not weakness, they are our strength
Ratan ji had once said that I have done the most courageous and most powerful thing in my life, that is, I allowed my feelings to be expressed in front of the world. You will get to hear hundreds of stories of how openly he loved and expressed his emotions, from those youth and children who would ever approach Ratan Tata in the hope of funding for their unique idea. .
Whenever he got any unique, original idea, he welcomed it with open heart and helped the youth. Even if he was angry with people, he never shied away from expressing his love.
The job of a leader is not to control, but to care.
We all want to become a leader in life, but do not think about what is the work of a true leader. He doesn’t just give instructions to people, makes them work, he also teaches them to work. Holds their hand, shows them the way. Helps them to become capable and does not want anything in return for doing all this. He always cares, worries, is proud.
The witnesses of this are the hundreds and thousands of people who have worked with him. Those who have seen Ratan Tata’s vision as well as his care, have grown with him. All the wealth of the world is very insignificant compared to this legacy.
Criticism is our greatest teacher
In 1981, when JRD Tata announced Ratan Tata as the next successor of Tata Group of Industries, there were more people who were angry with this decision than those who were happy with it. Employees, investors and shareholders of Tata Group were all angry with this decision. The editorials and opinion columns of the newspapers were saying that a novice was not capable of taking up this responsibility. Ratan Tata faced terrible public criticism.
But what was the result of all this? Ratan Tata had once said in a public forum that criticism is our greatest teacher. That’s what teaches. Challenges are actually learning opportunities and mistakes are life’s most valuable lessons.
There is no path that just runs straight in a line. The ups and downs are the sign of that path being alive. Even if ECG lines move straight, it means that the person has died.
Is there a new thought that no one has thought of before?
Famous Hollywood actor Al Pacino said a very beautiful thing in a conversation with The New York Times a few days ago – “Nothing is the best. Everyone is doing good work. Everyone is the best. The question is how original you are. What new did you think, what new did you do, which had never happened before.”
Ratan Tata’s entire life and career is a witness to innovation and uniqueness. Therefore, to move ahead, one should always ask oneself one question – “What new have I done, what new have I thought? Not the best, but how original am I.”
Whatever you want from others, do it yourself first.
As a leader, whatever we want our team to do, whatever path we want to follow, we ourselves have to follow that path first. First you have to do it yourself. If you want the team to work hard, you have to work four times as hard yourself. If you want to receive love, you have to give a lot of love first. Only that thing comes back to us, which we have given.
Ratan Tata’s life is an example of this. He got so much love, so much respect because he gave it. His team used to work hard because at the age of 80, he himself worked harder than the youth of the team.
How much did you invest in people and relationships?
Everyone invests in expanding the company and career, but the question is how much did they invest in life, relationships and friendships. They were not given just money and facilities. Gave them my time, attention, love and care. Don’t forget to embrace your partner and tell him how much you love him. Every night he kissed the children’s forehead and told them a story before putting them to sleep. He stood with his friends and colleagues in their happiness and sorrow, held their hands and hugged them.
This is the most valuable capital that Ratan Tata took with him. He never married. He had no family of his own, but still had a very large family, of people who loved him and cared for him.
