RBI’s new move aims to promote small payments through mobile phones even in areas without internet connectivity or limited connectivity. UPI Lite is a simpler version of the widely used Unified Payment Interface (UPI). It provides users with the convenience of transacting without the need for real-time internet or telecom connectivity. This proves to be most essential in rural areas or during network downtime.
What is different in UPI Lite?
In offline transactions, small payments can be made easily on the go without internet. Unlike regular UPI transactions, UPI Lite doesn’t send instant notifications due to the lack of real-time alerts, so your message inbox won’t get crowded. Quick and secure as there is no need for an additional factor of authentication (AFA), making the process faster.
Following are the changes due to RBI revising UPI Lite limit: Per transaction limit has been increased from Rs 500 to Rs 1000. At the same time, the total wallet limit has been increased by Rs 2 thousand to Rs 5 thousand. The initiative aims to encourage the use of UPI Lite for daily payments like buying groceries, paying for public transport or buying a quick snack.
Transactions can be fast even with no authentication or real-time internet required. You can easily make purchases with transactions of low rupees, which is very useful where there is shortage of time. Offline capability ensures that even users in areas with poor connectivity can participate in the digital economy.
