Mumbai. Hansal Mehta has been a Bollywood director who has shown the mirror to the society through his films and series. Both the lovely and cruel faces of the society have been created from a different perspective. Be it communal issues among immigrants in ‘Buckingham Murders’ or social prejudice against the LGBTQ+ community in ‘Aligarh’, Hansal Mehta has boldly told stories that comment on Indian society. He was highly appreciated for series like ‘Scoop’ and ‘Scam 1992: The Harshad Mehta Story’.
But ‘Dil Pe Mat Le Yaar!!’, released in the early 2000s, After films like this, he received death threats and also had to face protests. Despite these threats, he was not afraid to tell such stories. Hansal said in an interview to News18 Shosha, “These stories inspire me. Whenever there are barriers in the journey, it gives an opportunity to tie the thread afresh and start again.”
Hansal Mehta said, “I see obstacles as a sign that better and bigger things are to come. Then I wake up the next morning and say, ‘Okay, it’s time to move on.’ “Start doing what I like best and love the most.” Hansal made an adult comedy ‘Yeh Kya Ho Raha Hai?’ in 2002, long before films like ‘Masti’ were made. Had made. It flopped. But films like ‘Grand Masti’ and ‘Hunter’ are liked a lot.
Hansal Mehta said on the boom of films and series after the arrival of OTT, “The same happened with ‘Faraz’. When it was released in theatres, no one knew about it. It came and disappeared, but when it came on Netflix, it suddenly started trending around the world. It trended in the top 10 worldwide for 2 weeks. Ultimately, I believe that films get the audience they deserve.”
There was also opposition to the film. However, Hansal Mehta is now focusing on his series Mahatma Gandhi, in which Prateek Gandhi and ‘Harry Potter’ fame Tom Felton are in the lead roles. Regarding the film, Mehta said, “Right now, I am not in a position to give you too much information about it, only that the principal photography was completed last month. We are busy with post-production, and this is probably one of my most ambitious projects. I am very busy with this at the moment.”
